2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Spyder Convertible
Mitsubishi sounds its
challenge to the competition with the new 2002 Eclipse
Spyder Convertible line up. Two models are offered this
year, the Eclipse Spyder GS Convertible and the Eclipse
Spyder GT Convertible, each with two doors and a seating
capacity of four passengers. With its smooth lines and
power retractable soft top, this is a sporty vehicle
which will earn more than just a few appreciative glances
in your direction - and perhaps a bit of envy, too!
The Mitsubishi Eclipse
Spyder GS Convertible starts us off with a 2.4-litre
16-valve SOHC four-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel
injection, 147 horsepower, and 158 lbs-ft of torque.
Front independent suspension is comprised of MacPherson
struts, and the rear independent multi-link suspension
has coil springs.
True to form, it handles
extremely well on corners and accelerates rapidly. Standard
transmission is five-speed manual, although many of
you will appreciate the fact that automatic transmission
is available as an option. This model is equipped with
all-season highway radials, and drive type is two-wheel
front. The fuel economy rating for the standard transmission
model is 22/30 (city/hwy), while the automatic registers
at 20-27 (city/hwy).
Mitsubishi covers the
basics for safety features. In addition to overall design
aimed at absorbing impact away from passengers, the
Eclipse Spyder GS Convertible is equipped with a driver
depowered air bag, passenger depowered air bag, front
head restraints, and front fog lights for increased
visibility.
As for luxury items,
we feel that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS Convertible
offers up an excellent array of standards that include
air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry system,
power door locks, dual power mirrors, theft deterrent
system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows,
sixteen-inch alloy wheels, and an AM/FM stereo with
CD player.
As mentioned previously,
the soft top is power retractable and it also features
a rear glass window with defroster. Leather seating
is available as a pleasant option for extra comfort
and style. Altogether, a superior package for the price
tag.
Base invoice price: $22,019
Base list price: $23,617
The Mitsubishi Eclipse
Spyder GT takes the complete package of the previous
model and adds to it more power and options. Under the
hood, we see an upgrade to a 3.0-litre 24-valve SOHC
six-cylinder engine with 200 horsepower and 205 lbs-ft
of torque. Clearly, this model is aimed at motoring
purists.
In the safety department,
packages that include ABS brakes, side impact air bags,
and traction control are available, and each vehicle
is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. Interior features
such as a six-way power-adjustable driver seat, leather
upholstery, and a premium 210-Watt audio system with
seven speakers are also offered as upgrade packages,
and a leather-wrapped gear shift know is standard.
On the outside, we find
seventeen-inch alloy wheels, color-keyed rocker panel
extensions, and a chrome exhaust tip for eye-catching
detail.
Base invoice price: $23,876
Base list price: $25,876
