2002 Mitsubishi Lancer
New for 2002, the Mitsubishi
Lancer Sedan has been strategically positioned to face
off with some stiff competition - the Nissan Sentra,
Honda Civic, and the Toyota Corolla. The sedan has been
on the market in Japan for the past year, and Mitsubishi
executives have been carefully preparing to launch what
will be soon be the replacement of the existing Mirage
four-door sedan. The Mitsubishi Lancer is touted as
being loaded with more standard options at an economical
price tag.
Mitsubishi has introduced
three four-door models, each with a seating capacity
of five passengers with ample room in both the front
and the rear - more interior space than two of their
fiercest competitors. Here, we review the specifications
and features of the Lancer ES Sedan, Lancer OZ-Rally
Sedan, and Lancer LS Sedan.
Beginning with the Mitsubishi
Lancer ES Sedan, we find a refined interior that muffles
out noise and vibration extremely well. Passengers will
ride in the comfort of air conditioning and an AM/FM
stereo with CD player. Other standard conveniences include
power door locks, dual power mirrors, power windows,
and handy items such as steering wheel tilt and remote
trunk release. A keyless entry system is available as
a package, as is a folding rear seat to create additional
luggage space when the need arises. A variety of other
functional and aesthetic items complete the interior
and exterior presence.
The Lancer ES Sedan does
a good job at covering the basics when it comes to safety.
Standards are listed as a driver side air bag, passenger
side air bag, front head restraints, and child safety
locks. Rear head restraints are available as a package.
In the performance category,
the Mitsubishi Lancer ES Sedan is built with a 2.0-litre
four-cylinder engine with SOHC and 120 horsepower -
pretty much at par with the competition. Fuel is delivered
via a multi-port fuel injection system, drive type is
two-wheel front, and each vehicle is equipped with all-season
SBR tires. Standard transmission is five-speed manual,
but you may choose automatic transmission as an option.
The fuel economy rating has been measured at 29/41,
an interesting statistic for those with economy in mind.
Base invoice price: $13,032
Base list price: $13,897
The Mitsubishi Lancer
OZ-Rally Sedan takes the entry-level model and adds
to it rear head restraints, cruise control for those
who spend a lot of time on the highway, a convenient
keyless entry system, 15-inch alloy wheels, and a folding
rear seat. A rear spoiler is optional to add a sporty
look.
Base invoice price: $14,523
Base list price: $15,487
Finally, the Mitsubishi
Lancer LS Sedan rolls the many impressive luxury, safety,
and performance features of the previous models into
one and throws in four-speed automatic as its standard
transmission. Fuel economy sees a slight shift downward
to 27/39, but that is still a fairly impressive number.
ABS brakes can be ordered as a package, as can side
impact air bags. Given the statistics on safety these
days, these two additional safety features are an excellent
investment and may help keep you insurance rates down.
Base invoice price: $14,908
Base list price: $15,89
