2003 Dodge Durango
The 2003 Dodge Durango offers V8 power and seating
for eight, and yet it is still in the midsize SUV segment.
In effect, the Durango balances all of the appealing
characteristics of big sport-utility vehicles within
a smooth-handling midsize SUV frame. That means heavy-duty
performance is mixed with easy maneuverability, allowing
the Durango to accelerate quickly and take tight turns
without a problem.
The Durango is available in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel
drive configurations. Four-wheel drive customers can
choose either a part-time four-wheel system or a full-time
system that automatically delivers power to all four
wheels for maximum traction in wet or dry conditions.
There are four Durango models to choose from: Sport,
SLT, SLT Plus and R/T.
Under the Hood
Except for the top-line R/T model, all 2003 Dodge Durangos
are equipped with a steady 4.7-liter V8 with 235 horsepower
at 4800 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. 5-speed
automatic transmission is mated to this engine. Standard
on the R/T and optional with SLT and SLT Plus models
is a 5.9-liter V8 that delivers 245 horsepower at 4000
rpm and 335 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm (250 horsepower
and 345 lb-ft of torque with the R/T). This more powerful
engine uses 4-speed automatic transmission.
The Durango features a rack-and-pinion steering system
on both two and four-wheel drive models, which provides
more responsive steering and a more precise on-center
feel. A safe ride is achieved with dual front airbags,
a sturdy construction and 4-wheel disc brakes with antilock
braking in the rear.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
A fold-flat, hide-away third-row seat (standard on
SLT, SLT Plus and R/T) allows Durango to carry up to
eight passengers - something large families will certainly
put to use. Base Sport models provide front air conditioning
with manual dual-zone controls, power steering, cruise
control, cloth upholstery, power mirrors, windows and
door locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/cassette.
Other models add more and more features on top of this
standard convenience package.
For 2003, the optional equipment is offered in abundance.
Durangos can be revised to offer more off-road snarl
or to have heavy-duty towing capability, or simply to
provide a more luxurious interior setting.
