2003 Ford Explorer (Eddie Bauer and Limited Editions)
For 2003, an Eddie Bauer edition joins the lineup of
the largest SUV on the road. The Eddie Bauer series
offers greater interior comfort with two-tone leather-trimmed
captain's chairs for driver and front passenger and
the option of dual captain's chairs in the second row.
Cherry woodgrain trim and illuminated running boards
also are included on Eddie Bauer models.
All Excursions are giants, boasting a wheelbase of
137.1 inches and three rows of seating to accommodate
up to nine people. Manufacturers have provided enough
power, and then some, to account for this size. In addition,
there are a number of optional engines for those people
who deem an upgrade necessary. While all Excursions
maximize roominess, the Eddie Bauer and Limited editions
go even further with added comfort and refinement. At
the top of the Excursion line, these two editions come
loaded with an abundance of standard features.
Under the Hood
Excursion is powered by one of three powerful engines
and can tow up to 11,000 pounds when properly equipped.
All models are available with two-wheel, rear-wheel
drive or four-wheel drive. With two-wheel drive models,
the standard engine is a powerful 5.4-liter V8 with
255 horsepower at 4500rpm and 350lb-ft of torque at
2500rpm. Four-wheel drive models are equipped with a
massive 6.8-liter V10 with 310 horsepower at 4250rpm
and 425lb-ft of torque at 3250rpm (optional on two-wheel
drive models). New shock absorbers for 2003, 4-speed
automatic transmission, dual front airbags and antilock
4-wheel disc brakes for shorter stopping distances are
all part of the standard package.
Available across all Excursion models is a 7.3-liter
Turbodiesel V8 with 250 horsepower at 2600rpm and 525lb-ft
of torque at 1600rpm. Later in the model year, an improved
diesel V8 will be offered. The new, more powerful, cleaner
6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel and new five-speed TorqShift
automatic transmission will combine to make a best-in-class
325 horsepower at 3,300rpm and 550lb-ft of torque at
2,000rpm. It will offer up to 10 percent better fuel
economy and 20 percent lower emissions.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Eddie Bauer trim provides an Arizona Beige grille
insert and body-color grille surround, front and rear
fascias in Arizona Beige and Eddie Bauer badging. New
for 2003 are 16-inch forged aluminum wheels on the Limited
series. As far as standard equipment goes, both editions
are stocked full. Front automatic climate controls,
leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and outside-mirror-mounted
turn-signal lights head the list.
A Rear Seat Entertainment System, including a DVD player
and outputs for games and headphones, is an option that
will entertain passengers for hours.
New and improved for 2003, the Eddie Bauer and Limited
editions of the Ford Excursion match comfort with brawn.
