2003 Nissan Maxima reviews and buying guide.

2003 Nissan Maxima resources:

2003 Nissan Maxima

The 2003 Nissan Maxima has a great reputation in the midsize car class, as is to be expected in a manufacturer's flagship sedan. Few changes have been made to this year's Maxima, which is available in GXE, GLE and sporty SE models.

In all three of these models, Nissan offers a luxurious collection of standard features at competitive prices and they are appropriate choices for those who want luxury, speed and handling in a refined package.

Under The Hood

All Maximas come with a 3.5 liter dohc V6 with 4-speed automatic transmission capable of 255 hp at 5800 rpm. This engine torques to the max at 4400 rpm, putting out 246 ft-lbs. Mileage isn't bad either, with 20/26 mpgs (Hwy/City).

A 6-speed manual transmission is optional for the sporty SE, and it has tested at slightly better mileage (21/28). Otherwise, however, the engine characteristics are pretty similar for these two options. The differences between the models come as a few other drivability features.

The base model GXE comes with dual-front airbags, front-seat active head restraints, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, brake assist and 16-inch tires. Upgrade to the SE and add sport suspension, 17-inch tires and a rear spoiler to the mix. On the top of the line model GLE, front-side airbags are also standard.

Standard Features and Optional Add-ons

If you buy the Maxima GXE, expect to find the following standard equipment and more: cruise control, air conditioning, tilt steering with radio controls, trip computer, front bucket seats, 8-way power driver seat, power everything else, remote keyless entry and a stereo with CD included.

By the time you get to the GLE, you can add a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, driver-seat memory and an upgrade to an in-dash 6-CD Bose audio system.

In fact, the Maxima's base model GXE comes loaded with so many strong features that only a few options are left to add-on, such as a rear spoiler and mudguards.

The SE and GLE have both got a wider collection of options available. For example, a navigation screen can be installed in the dash, a power sunroof can be added, and heated front seats, and/or chrome allow wheels, just to name a few that aren't standard for the top of the line GLE.
