2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R
In 2002, the legendary SE-R returned again to bolster
the Sentra lineup. With the most power and the highest
level of performance ever in a Sentra sedan, the competition
surely must have let out a collective groan when they
learned of the SE-R's revival. Last seen in 1994, the
reputation of the SE-R is backed up by its numerous
awards, as from 1991 to 1994 it was a Car and Driver
"10 Best" winner four times and an Automobile
"All-Star" twice. Not a bad resume at all.
Needless to say, the 2003 Sentra SE-R will accept nothing
less than the highest standards. The base SE-R model
is joined by an even faster Spec V model. The SE-R features
an exterior style that causes necks to snap - a result
of its large wheels and tires (16-inch on SE-R and 17-inch
on SE-R Spec V models), rear spoiler and large chrome
exhaust tips. If you really want to be noticed, the
SE-R is available in a new bright yellow called Sunburst.
Under the Hood
Powering the flashy Sentra SE-R is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder
engine. This engine, named QR25, produces 175 horsepower
at 6000 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque 4000 rpm in the
SE-R Spec V model and 165 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of
torque in the SE-R. These two really are modern interpretations
of a proud tradition, as they are up 35/25 horsepower
and 48/43 lb-ft of torque from the previous generation
SE-R. Mated to the QR25 engine is a new close-ratio
6-speed manual transmission (SE-R Spec V), 5-speed manual
transmission (SE-R), or a 4-speed electronically controlled
automatic transmission with overdrive (optional on SE-R).
The SE-R handles extremely well and provides a smooth
ride as a result of its performance-tuned front and
rear shock absorbers and a front strut tower brace.
Quick stops are ensured with large 4-wheel disc brakes.
A 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor antilock brake system
is also available.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Both SE-R models appear different from other Sentras
on the inside as well as outside. The SE-R features
an overhead storage console with map lights, special
seat cloth, unique gauges and a leather-wrapped steering
wheel and gearshift knob. Always one to go that extra
yard, the Spec V has a special instrument meter finish
with red illumination, a special leather-wrapped steering
wheel, a Lava interior with black and new silver accents
and Skyline-style sport bucket seats to relax in.
Plenty of options are available to match the power
of these SE-R models. Extra airbags, a sunroof package
and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer are just some of the
goodies offered.
The SE-R line is alive and kicking again, and for Sentra
enthusiasts, that is definitely a good thing.
