2003 Pontiac Aztec
It has often been said that people are resistant to
change. This certainly holds true with respect to the
Pontiac Aztec. Upon first arriving on the scene, the
Aztec caused such a stir with its design and capabilities
that the automotive world reeled back in shock. Immediately
thereafter, the Aztec was slotted into an entirely new
vehicle class: the sport recreation vehicle (SRV) segment.
Gradually, Aztec's wealth of performance and versatility
features began to win people over. Outwardly crafted
as a sporty midsize SUV, the Aztec blends sedan performance
with minivan reliability and the ruggedness of a sport
utility vehicle, all styled in a fashion that can only
be described as unique. The acceptance was complete
when, in 1991, Aztec was given top category ranking
in the J.D. Power and Associates 2001 Automotive Performance,
Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.
Now Aztec is the leader of its class, perpetually arriving
with new innovations that further set it apart. For
2003, the Aztec is offered in front-wheel drive or all-wheel
drive models, each featuring comfort, power, performance
and the unmistakable Aztec design.
Under the Hood
The engine that drives the 2003 Aztec is a very capable
3.4-liter V6 with 185 horsepower. The engine is mated
to an electronically controlled four-speed automatic
transmission with adaptive calibration logic. Both models
handle fluidly with power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering,
and both feature dual front and side-impact airbags
as well.
The front-wheel drive Aztec and the all-wheel drive
come with antilock brakes. Versatrak - an all-wheel-drive
system engineered specifically for Aztek - stabilizes
the all-wheel drive model. Much more effective than
AWD systems offered on competitive makes, Versatrak
directs torque to the rear wheels with the best traction.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
An innovative design defines the Aztec, as does its
comfortable five-passenger seating and its wealth of
standard features. Front air conditioning, power steering,
front bucket seats, split folding rear seat, center
console with cooler and storage, AM/FM/CD player and
cargo cover are just some of the names on the list.
Joining Aztek's color palette for 2003 are Liquid Gray
Metallic, Electric Blue Metallic, Summit White and Victory
Red.
The 2003 Aztec offers an optional camping package.
For the outdoor lover, it features a custom tent with
special fitted rear awning for storage and a custom-sized
air mattress. For in-vehicle fun, a DVD entertainment
system and XM Satellite Radio are available.
At the forefront of the SRV class, the Aztec continues
to reinvent itself.
