2003 Saturn ION reviews and buying guide.

2003 Saturn ION resources:

2003 Saturn ION

New from the ground up, the front-wheel-drive 2003 Saturn ION replaces the S-Series in Saturn's lineup. With a fresh look and a new attitude that is a conveyed through its standard features and design, the ION is sure to make a splash. The ION is a compact car in name only, as it offers a larger exterior, more interior room, a new powertrain, enhanced ride and responsive, sporty handling.

The ION is available in two distinct models. There is a five-passenger, four-door sedan and a four-passenger quad coupe. The latter is given its name because it features dual rear-access doors. While closely related, the sedan and quad coupe are essentially given completely different styles.

Under the Hood

Though they may appear different, both the sedan and the quad coupe are fitted with the same capable engine. It is an Ecotec 2.2-liter, inline 4-cylinder featuring 140 horsepower. Both automatic and manual transmissions are available. While the fuel economy of the quad coupe is yet to be determined, if it's anything like the sedan, it will be quite impressive. ION sedans with manual transmission are given a rating of 26/33 mpg (city/hwy), while automatics offer 24/32 mpg (city/hwy).

The Saturn ION is one of the first passenger cars in North America equipped with electric power steering (EPS). The system provides additional assist for low-speed maneuvers such as parking, and is a major reason why the ION has such a good fuel economy. Safety is thoroughly covered in both models with a curtain side airbag system, front driver and passenger-side dual-stage airbags and available antilock brakes and traction control.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Color combinations and trim cues that are unique to the sedan and quad coupe enable a differentiated interior compartment in each. This personalization theme is taken even further, as special, color-coordinated interior trim pieces are offered for the center-mounted instrument cluster, shifter, key fob, and HVAC and radio control panels.

However, the sedan and quad coupe are not completely different. Both models share such practical features as ergonomically positioned controls, a center stack that incorporates the driver information center, audio system controls and HVAC controls and outlets and
dual storage compartments on the left-hand side of the instrument panel. Of course, there are also options to choose from to spice things up a little.

New and unique, the 2003 Saturn ION is available in two distinct models that both offer a fresh approach to the driving experience.
