2003 Suzuki Vitara 2-door
The 2003 Suzuki Vitara 2-door is a sporty and distinctive
entry to the compact SUV class. It has a single choice
of engine; a fuel-efficient but well-mannered and reasonably
powerful 4-cyl and this year is available in 2WD and
4WD models. The collection of interior amenities on
the Vitara is a big part of its success with many standard
items that are often optional extras for this price
range. The convertible nature of this Vitara means that
it has a summer cruiser type feel and allows some real
top-down enjoyment.
However, the powerful engine, ground-clearance, 4WD
and 2-speed transfer case mean this also has to be taken
seriously as a multipurpose all-terrain vehicle that
will get you into and out of narrow spaces and dirt
roads regardless of adverse road conditions. It will
also be a comfort to have in the driveway during a snowstorm.
The Vitara is a good buy with a diverse range of uses
and a reputation for reliability.
Under the Hood
The two door Vitara comes with a 2-liter 4-cyl engine
with 127 hp at 6000 rpm and 134lb-ft of torque at 3000.
It comes with either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed
manual transmission and they both get the same decent
mileage with 22/25 mpg (city/hwy).
Dual-front airbags and daytime running lights are standard,
as is a full-size spare 215/65R16 tire. The 4WD edition
comes with a 2-speed transfer case. The folding convertible
top frees up a significant amount of room for transporting
cargo of different sizes and the Vitara models all offer
optional antilock brakes and alloy wheels.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The 2-door Vitara has an assortment of interior amenities
that include air conditioning, tilt power steering,
power windows, door locks and mirrors, cloth upholstery
on front bucket seats and a rear split-folding bench
seat, and an AM/FM/CD player. In addition, a tachometer,
visor mirrors and automatic headlights add value. Vitara
floor mats can also be added, but as an optional extra.
In the final analysis, the Vitara 2-door offers a good
level of standard amenities, a 4WD capability for adverse
terrain, versatility for carrying cargo, both top-down
and top-up, a reasonably powerful engine and all at
a very good low price.
Suzuki, in general, is trying to make vehicles that
are accessible to all budgets without sacrificing quality
and a reputation for reliability.
