2003 Toyota Land Cruiser reviews and buying guide.

2003 Toyota Land Cruiser resources:

2003 Toyota Land Cruiser

The 2003 Toyota Land Cruiser is a full-size SUV gains significant mechanical, exterior and interior enhancements. 5-speed automatic transmission is coupled with more power to offer improved responsiveness. Also new, the variable gear rack-and-pinion steering system makes maneuvering in tight-quarters easier.

Safety enhancements for the Land Cruiser include next-generation airbag sensors that accompany multi-stage driver and front passenger airbags while newly available are front and second-row side-impact side curtain airbags. Generally refined styling including badging, a new chrome-styled grille and rear bumper and clear-lens turn signals distinguish the 2003 Land Cruiser.

Under the Hood

Naturally, a full-size SUV requires a powerful engine that will handle anything the road or towing profile throws at it. The Land Cruiser’s 4.7-liter dohc V8 engine gains 5hp for 2003, bringing it to 235hp. Torque peaks at 3,400 rpm with 320 lb.-ft. but 80 percent of it is available at only 1,100 rpm. The Land Cruiser can pull up to 6,500 pounds but despite this, because of its engines efficiency, the EPA has certified it as a Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV).

The new 5-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous 4-speed while a new variable gear rack-and-pinion steering system makes it easier to maneuver the Land Cruiser in very tight places. The Land Cruiser is built on a particularly tough and stiff chassis that translates into a smooth ride and the ability to handle rough driving conditions. Meanwhile, double wishbone independent front suspension and a four-link rear axle with coil springs balance smooth on-road driving with the ruggedness needed for off-road driving. This is assisted by traction control and a full-time 4-wheel drive system that splits the power evenly between front and rear.

Safety features include four-wheel anti-lock brakes with special response to steep slopes, Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) and an Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) feature all allow the driver more control. A sophisticated airbag system combine with assorted optional add-ons including front-side airbags, curtain-side airbags and daytime running lights to give the Land Cruiser a leading position in SUV safety.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

A reclining 60/40 split second-row seat and a foldaway/removable 50/50 split third-row seat combine with the two front captains chairs to seat 8 adults in comfort in the Land Cruiser. The standard JBL Premium sound system is a 3-in-1 AM/FM/ETR/cassette/CD audio system that includes an in-dash six-disc CD changer with a maximum output of 300 Watts that plays through seven speakers.

Optional features are very extensive including a multi-function navigation system package adding a DVD head unit that accommodates both map discs and DVD movies.
