2003 Volkswagen Beetle
The retro-style Beetle introduces a convertible model to its
family for 2003. With this new convertible feature,
the lineup of the Beetle is pushed into near-incredulous
proportions. No fewer than four engines are offered
for 2003, ranging from supreme performance-driven models
to the ultra-efficient TDI motor. Throw in a new Turbo
S model, which tops the list in terms of speed and capability,
and the selection is complete.
The Beetle has been an instant fan-favorite since its re-introduction,
in part because of its style and attitude and in part
because of the Volkswagen nameplate it proudly carries.
Customers know what to expect from Volkswagen models,
and the Beetle is no different from the others. Under
the shell of its sporty design is all the efficiency
and durability of German engineering, with safety and
comfort both plainly evident as well. For 2003, the
trim levels ascend as follows: GL, GLS, GLX and Turbo
S.
Under the Hood
GL trim-level models are equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder
engine, capable of 115 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque.
Next up on the list is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine
with 150 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque (GLS and
GLX trims). GLS TDI models have a 1.9-liter, in-line,
turbo-charged direct injection 4-cylinder diesel engine,
specially engineered for maximum efficiency. It generates
90 horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque and has a fuel
economy of 42/49 mpg (city/hwy) for manuals, 34/45 mpg
(city/hwy) for automatics. The new Turbo S is given
a beefed-up 1.8-liter 4-cylinder motor with 180 horsepower
and 174 lb-ft of torque.
5-speed manual transmission is standard on all Beetles, except
for the Turbo S, which has 6-speed manual transmission.
4-speed automatic is optional (except the Turbo S).
In addition to its smooth ride and precise handling,
the 2003 Beetle is also safe. Dual front airbags, front
side airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard
across the board.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Whether it’s the new convertible or the traditional hatchback,
the Beetle sets a high standard for comfort. GL models
are appointed with air conditioning, cruise control,
cloth upholstery (hatchbacks) or vinyl upholstery (convertibles),
a center console, heated power mirrors with turn signals,
power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry,
an AM/FM/cassette and much more. Classy GLX models and
the new Turbo S add leather upholstery, heated front
seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a Monsoon sound
system and an automatic day/night rearview mirror.
The options list will satisfy customers looking for more comfort
features and increased safety. What all 2003 Beetles
offer is a sporty ride and tons of fun.
