2003 Volkswagen GTI reviews and buying guide.

2003 Volkswagen GTI resources:

2003 Volkswagen GTI

The GTI is the driver’s car from Volkswagen, with high-performance engineering and a relaxing comfort level that is a result of the numerous standard features that line its interior. The 2003 Volkswagen GTI is essentially a supped-up, two-door Golf, increasing the horsepower and throwing in a healthy dose of attitude as well.

The 2003 Volkswagen GTI is offered in two models that are distinguished by the engine under the hood (GTI and GTI VR6). Like other Volkswagens, the GTI comes with an extensive warranty package that underscores the confidence manufacturers have in their vehicles. The 5 year/60,000 mile LimitedPowertrain Warranty is joined by a 4 year/50,000 mile Limited New Vehicle Warranty, while an additional anti-corrosion guarantee is also provided.

Under the Hood

The first of the two GTI engines is highly capable. It is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder model capable of 180 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. The second engine brings the performance level up a few notches. It is a 2.8-liter V6 that pumps out 200 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Entry-level GTI models offer 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic, while GTI VR6 models offer 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic.

Even though it is a high-performance vehicle, the GTI doesn’t guzzle the gas. Models with the 1.8-liter engine have a rating of 24/31 mpg (city/hwy) for manuals and 22/29 mpg (city/hwy) for automatics. GTI VR6 models have a rating of 21/30 mpg (city/hwy) for manuals and 21/31 mpg (city/hwy) for automatics. Safety is addressed with traction control, dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The 2003 GTI essentially offers the same standard package as the Golf. All 2003 Golf models come with air conditioning, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, height-adjustable front bucket seats, a center console, cupholders, heated power mirrors, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player, a digital clock, map lights, illuminated visor mirrors, a rear defogger and more. The GTI adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a trip computer (GTI VR6).

The options list is varied and thorough, addressing both comfort and performance. Alone or bolstered by these add-ons, the 2003 GTI will surely satisfy drivers who like a bit of oomph with the ride.
