2003 Volvo XC90 reviews and buying guide.

2003 Volvo XC90 resources:

2003 Volvo XC90

The 2003 Volvo XC90 AWD is a mid-size sport-utility vehicle that represents Volvo's first entry into this competitive class. Not surprisingly, the Volvo design priorities of durability, safety, quality and comfort fit well with the class requirements. The XC90 is a luxury SUV that will appeal to those looking for the ultimate active-lifestyle vehicle without sacrificing comfort in the process. In fact, the XC90 offers plenty of innovation, sophistication and capability in both areas.

A powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged engine powers the XC90 sport-utility vehicle while well-equipped option packages make for an additional chameleon ability that will satisfy diverse needs. Volvo uses industry-leading technology to reduce the impact of their vehicles on the environment and the XC90 is no exception with ample power accompanied by unusually good fuel economy ratings. Additional power is available with the alternative XC90 AWD T6.

Under the Hood

The base XC90 AWD comes with a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces 208 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a stout 236 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. On the T6, a twin turbocharged 2.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine making 268 horsepower at 5,100 rpm and a stout 280 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,800 - 5,000 rpm is in place.

5-speed Geartronic transmission allows either fully automatic or driver selectable gear changes. Fuel economy ranges from 15/20 mpg (city/hwy) on the T6 to 18/24 on the regular 5-cylinder engine. Both all-wheel-drive models will tow up to 5,000 pounds. Created by Haldex and designed for the XC90, the AWD system transfers power between the front and rear wheels, depending on available traction.

A very impressive and comprehensive array of safety features is a standard offering on Volvo vehicles. Both XC90 models come with antiskid/traction control, antilock brakes and Volvo's new Rollover Stability Control system. Also standard are: dual-stage front airbags (SRS), Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC), seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners in all seating positions, Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), Volvo's safety cage construction and the ISO-FIX attachment for rearward-facing child safety seats.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Naturally, in order to compete with the standard set by the class, amenities have to be abundant and they are on both XC90s, although the T6 is definitely enhanced. Leather upholstery, seat and audio system upgrades, a power sunroof and some electronic gadgets add to value at this level.

A wide-ranging collection of options improves versatility, including extensive and comprehensive packages. For example, the Climate Package is available for the XC90 this year. It includes such advantages as Rainsensor windshield wipers, heated seats and headlight washer/wipers.
