2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Review:
A notch above the 1500 stable of Silverado models, the 2500
series has all the defining features of this full-size pickup
truck—power, ruggedness and durability—plus a heavier frame.
The ¾-ton Silverado 2500 also mimics the 1500 in terms of
its offerings. It comes in regular cab, extended cab and new
crew cab body styles. Regular cabs have two doors and seat
two or three. Extended cabs have rear-hinged back doors; crew
cabs have four full doors. Both can seat up to six.
Attached to these body styles are two different cargo beds.
Regular cabs get an 8.1-ft Fleetside long box, while extendeds
and crew cabs have a 6.5-ft Fleetside short box. All of them,
no matter what the configuration, are tough as nails.
Under the Hood
While the 1500 series has a number of engines spread across
its broad lineup of models, the 2500 series has just one for
all types. But that engine just happens to be the most powerful
of the bunch.
It is a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine, and it can produce 325
horsepower at 4400 rpm and 365 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
It can be mated to two transmission types: 5-speed heavy-duty
manual or 4-speed automatic.
For 2004, the revolutionary Quadrasteer system is available
on 2500 crew cab models. At low speeds, it enables the rear
wheels to turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels
for excellent maneuverability. In fact, the turning diameter
of 2500 models with Quadrasteer is reduced 21 percent, from
49.6 feet to 37.4 feet.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Safety is a top priority with the 2004 Silverado 2500. It
has an advanced dual-level airbag system designed to detect
vehicle deceleration and, based on the deceleration data,
provide an appropriate amount of airbag inflation. Antilock
4-wheel disc brakes are also standard.
Another piece of standard equipment that customers will enjoy
is a dual-zone heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
system, available with both manual and automatic climate control.
If you like decadence, you’re best bet is the top line LT
model, which features the OnStar System, leather upholstery,
heated front bucket seats, a Bose AM/FM radio with in-dash
6-disc CD changer and much more.
And then there’s the abundant options list ready to serve
you.
