Used 2004 Ford Freestar
Ford drops the Windstar and introduces the Freestar in 2004.
Though the former had a nice run, the Freestar is intended
to be Ford’s minivan of the future. As they put it, it is
designed to be the most powerful, most flexible and highest-quality
minivan to ever roll off their production line.
Out with the old and in with the new. That’s essentially
the motto for the Freestar. It features major upgrades in
safety innovation, interior design, flexible fold-flat third
row seating, steering, ride and performance—including a newly
available 4.2-liter V6 engine with best-in-class torque.
Basically, everything is improved with the new Freestar.
One thing that remains, however, is the size. Freestar models
are the same dimensions as the old Windstar, each model seating
seven. But that’s pretty much where the similarities end.
Under the Hood
The base S model, plus SE and SES trims, come with a 3.9-liter
V6 engine. It delivers 193 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 248
lb-ft of torque at 3700 rpm. Teamed with this is Ford’s latest-generation
4-speed automatic transmission with improved shift quality
and improved downshift response.
SEL and Limited models feature the aforementioned 4.2-liter
V6. It cranks 202 horsepower at 4250 rpm and the class-leading
267 lb-ft of torque at 3750 rpm. Both engines give Freestar
an ultra-low emissions classification.
The new Freestar offers more safety and security features
than any of its competition. All models have antilock 4-wheel
disc brakes and a tire-inflation monitor, among other things.
Ford’s segment-exclusive Safety Canopy rollover curtain airbag
system is new for 2004.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Flexibility is key. Two second-row bucket seats that flip
and fold forward are standard. The third-row bench folds into
the floor—a Ford first. In addition, the third-row bench also
flips backward for rear-facing seating under the open liftgate
when the vehicle is parked.
As noted, there are many 2004 Freestar models. At the top,
the Limited model features such standard equipment as leather
upholstery, power-adjustable pedals, tri-zone automatic climate
controls, heated power mirrors with turn signals and power
sliding rear doors.
Of course, a list of options attends every Freestar model
for its debut year. There are many groups, as well as stand-alones
available, including a rear-seat DVD entertainment system
(all but the base S), a cargo management system and heated
front seats (Limited only).
