Used 2004 Honda Pilot

Just like Honda’s minivan, the Odyssey, the Pilot offers three model trims to customers for 2004: LX, EX and leather-upholstered EX-L. It also shares the same 240-horsepower engine as the Odyssey. As with the minivan, it gets the midsize sport utility vehicle up to speed without a problem.

The interior comfort is nice, the ruggedness useful and the durability key, but Pilot’s biggest feature of them all is probably its safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Pilot its highest rating—five stars—in both frontal and side-impact tests.

For 2004, the Pilot doesn’t get too many changes. It continues to offer all-wheel drive as the standard configuration, and it continues to be as capable as ever. There is a bit more luxury added to the ride however, as the EX-L trim now has heated front seats and heated mirrors.

Under the Hood

The engine the Pilot shares with the Odyssey is a 3.5-liter VTEC V6 model. It mates to a 5-speed automatic transaxle to generate the 240 horsepower at 5500 rpm, as well as up to 242 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm.

The VTEC engine is designed to maximize the production rate depending on the driving situation. The valve train adjusts the timing, duration and lift of the intake valves according to engine speed. Additionally, the engine's induction, intake and exhaust systems provide optimum airflow at all speeds.

As mentioned, all-wheel drive is standard. It is Honda’s Variable Torque Management 4-wheel-drive system (VTM-4). The VTM-4 senses wheel slippage before it takes place, adjusting wheel speed to give the Pilot increased 4-wheel traction in snow and ice or on muddy trails.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Functional applications are key to the 2004 Honda Pilot’s design—it is not just for looks, in other words. The Pilot has a one-piece rear liftgate without separate-opening glass. In addition, the second and third-row seats are 60/40 split folding benches, providing more interior room when needed.

Base LX models get dual front airbags, front side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and such comfort appointments as power mirrors, windows and door locks and an AM/FM/CD player. The EX adds automatic climate controls, an 8-way power driver seat, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player and steering-wheel radio controls.

A DVD entertainment system and a navigation system are optional with the 2004 EX-L trim.
