Used 2004 Saturn VUE

Buying Guide for the Saturn VUE:

Saturn’s compact sport utility vehicle skids into 2004 much improved from last year. Among the major changes that elevate this value-conscious model are a new V6 engine, upgraded safety, refined interior looks and more premium equipment.

In other words, Saturn really did the business to the 2004 VUE. Also new is a VUE Red Line model, scheduled for introduction in mid-2004. Along with the ION Red Line, this high-octane model looks to position Saturn in the realm of the major performance-driven vehicles on the road. The VUE Red Line is covered in a separate review.

When you think of the SUV with the most powerful engine in the compact segment, chances are Saturn is not the first make that springs to mind. But that’s just what the new V6 does for GM’s quiet division. Things are beginning to change at Saturn, and the VUE is right up there with the upgrades.

Under the Hood

The other engine inside the VUE is a 2.2-liter Ecotec inline 4-cylinder model. It generates 143 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 152 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. It is available with 5-speed manual transmission or with GM's advanced VTi variable transmission. The VTi provides good fuel economy and excellent acceleration and hill-climbing performance.

The V6 engine available with 2004 VUE models is a 3.5-liter model. It produces 250 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 242 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm and is mated to a new 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with grade logic control, which helps eliminate hunting between gears. This new powertrain increases towing ability up to 3,500 pounds.

Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations are available. Four-wheel independent suspension is standard, allowing the VUE to tackle off-road trails and highway potholes.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The four-door VUE has seating for five, plus 30 cubic feet of cargo space. The interior design also includes a number of innovative storage solutions. Versatility is enhanced with a 70/30 split folding rear seat and a front passenger seatback that also folds flat.

With the V6 model, customers are treated to more interior refinements. Both models can be upgraded with a number of different options as well. There’s XM Satellite Radio, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and three new optional MP3 audio systems: a CD with MP3; a six-CD changer with MP3; and a new CD/DVD with MP3.
