Used 2004 Toyota Matrix
Buying Guide for the Toyota Matrix:
Sort of like a Pontiac Vibe, the Toyota Matrix continues
to defy categorization. It is in the ever-murky ‘crossover’
realm, a designation affixed to vehicles whose characteristics
spill across segment lines.
With the Matrix, the crossover occurs when one tries to define
the type of body it employs. The Matrix uses the Corolla sedan’s
platform and stretches it into a tall, wagon-like design.
The 2004 Matrix is out early to keep the momentum going.
In essence, the 2004 Matrix is unchanged for the new model
year, so if you missed picking one up last year, here’s your
time to do it now.
Under the Hood
There are two engines spread across the three-model Matrix
lineup. In addition, customers can also choose between front-wheel
drive versions or those with all-wheel drive.
The first engine, found with Standard and XR models, is a
1.8-liter, 4-cylinder model featuring 130 horsepower and 125
lb-ft of torque. The top-line XRS trim has the same engine
in terms of dimensions, but with 180 horsepower and 130 lb-ft
of torque.
The 2004 Matrix has engine-speed sensing power-assisted rack-and-pinion
steering. It sounds complicated, and what it does is adjust
the steering feel according to the engine’s speed, giving
the Matrix appropriate maneuverability at both high and low
speeds.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door Matrix fits five passengers, with room to spare.
Its wheelbase is 102.4 inches and its width 69.9 inches. There
is a total of 53.2 cubic inches to play with on the inside
as well.
Both the passenger seat and the rear seat fold flat, giving
you much-needed versatility when trying to load up the Matrix
with suitcases or skis or anything else you need to transport.
Such things like air conditioning, an interior air filter,
an AM/FM/CD player and a rear defogger are standard on all
models, with the appointments going up in number with the
trim level.
For added safety, antilock brakes and front side airbags
can be had from the options list. The XRS also features an
optional navigation system, which includes an AM/FM radio
with under-seat mounted 6-disc CD changer. But the list doesn’t
stop there, so you shouldn’t either.
