What 2019 Audi A4 Trim Level Should you Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

The 2019 Audi A4 is a class-defining crossover sedan, boasting the best of both luxury features and practical features in one compact body. The crossover sedan class is perhaps one of the most competitive in the entire car market, with countless models from a range of companies releasing each year. However, the A4 continues to stay at the top of this class due to its range of features and trim options.

Audi has focused on a few core areas to ensure the A4 stays in its top spot. One of the main areas that Audi has preserved throughout the many models of the A4 is its interior space. In the 2019 model, it’s quite easy to be comfortable in the rear seats as an adult. This is no easy feat for a crossover sedan, as interiors are usually lacking in leg space and in roof height. The A4 pulls this off with class, making sure that you have enough room to sit comfortably while still giving you much-needed features like cupholders, climate control, and more.

There are some new features in the 2019 A4 models to be aware of. All trim levels have received an aesthetic upgrade in the back, with brand new angled tailpipes accenting the curves on the car’s body. You can’t get a manual transmission in the A4 anymore, as all trims have been optimized for automatic transmissions (or in the case of the Ultra trim, an automated manual). Finally, new bumpers and bumper styles are available if you pick an all-wheel-drive version of one of the trims.

Don’t forget that all trims can be upgraded with the Ultra configuration to give the car more power on the road. The Ultra configuration boosts the 2019 Audi A4’s engine to a turbocharged 2L engine that can produce 190 horsepower. The engine is paired to a 7-speed automatic (or an automated manual, as Audi prefers).

In 2019, Audi has maintained trim levels from previous years. There are three main trim levels, ranging from the base Premium to the top-of-the-line Prestige. There are unique upgrades associated with each of these three trim levels, so it’s important to know exactly which features and upgradable packages are available in which trims. This guide will help you understand the major differences among the three trim levels, and ultimately will help you decide on the best trim for your driving preferences.

Compare the 2019 Audi A4 Premium vs Premium Plus Trims. What is the difference?

The base trim of the 2019 Audi A4 is the A4 Premium. Though it is a base trim, the Premium certainly comes packed with features. With no upgrades, the Premium A4 comes with interior luxury features like ambient LED lighting in the cabin, a well-placed sunroof, and leather seating throughout. The front seats are extremely comfortable, offering 8-way power adjustment for both the driver and the front-seat passenger along with 4-way lumbar adjustment for the driver. You’ll also get some exterior features that enhance your driving, including LED daytime lights and extremely bright xenon headlights for nighttime driving. The rearview mirror automatically dims when necessary, and the front windshield wipers will detect rain and automatically work at the correct speed to keep the windshield clear.

The technology included in the base Premium trim is nothing to scoff at. The infotainment system is smooth to use and can be integrated with your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This is particularly useful for navigation with Google or Apple Maps and audio streaming from your favorite media streaming services. You can also keep your phone charged via the two included USB ports, and audio streamed from your phone will be played via the excellently arranged 10-speaker system. There are only a few safety technology features available without upgrading - namely a front collision mitigation system that can detect pedestrians and begin braking beforehand - so you probably will want to upgrade the A4 Premium with the Convenience package.

This Convenience package ups the number of safety technology features, giving you a blind spot monitoring system that synchronizes with the also-included rear collision mitigation system. This rear collision system works similarly to the front collision system, releasing the brake earlier than you might otherwise to reduce the chance of whiplash. The package also includes some necessary features like a car alarm, heated mirrors, and multiple memory settings for different drivers. If you decide to purchase the base Premium trim, you should also expect to upgrade with this package to get these essential features.

The second trim available for the 2019 Audi A4 is the Premium Plus. As the name suggests, the Premium Plus comes with all of the features in the Premium trim along with the features included in the Convenience package as standard features for the car. On top of that, it upgrades the 10-speaker sound system to a 19-speaker Bang and Olufsen system, which absolutely blows the Premium’s sound quality out of the water. You’ll also get parking sensors to help you navigate into tight spots. Finally, you’ll get slightly larger wheels, upgrading the Premium’s 17-inch alloy wheels to the Premium Plus’s 18-inch alloy wheels.

The A4 Premium Plus has a package to upgrade the center console and dashboard of your vehicle, though this is likely not something you will consider unless you hate the layout of the A4’s dashboard. The Virtual Cockpit package allows you to customize the dashboard display behind your steering wheel exactly how you want, arranging each individual gauge and readout to a visible spot. This package also increases the size of the infotainment screen to a whopping 8.3 inches and lets you make the car a WiFi hotspot if wanted. If you like your interior technology to be as customizable as possible, then this is the upgrade for you - if not, then there’s no absolute need to get this package.

Overall, the Premium Plus is a better bang for your buck than the Premium with no upgrades. As the Premium Plus comes with all of the features of the Premium and the Convenience package for only slightly more than the cost of those two together, there’s little reason to only get the base model. Furthermore, the parking sensors are a huge plus in the city when you need to get into tight spaces.

Compare the 2019 A4 Premium Plus vs Prestige Trims. What is the difference?

If you’ve objectively looked at the Premium and Premium Plus trims, you may be thinking that there’s barely anything left to upgrade. Audi clearly doesn’t think this is the case, packing even more features into the astounding Prestige trim. To start, the A4 Prestige gets everything from the Premium, Premium Plus, Convenience, and Virtual Cockpit trims and packages.

On top of the base features, you get a full sensor upgrade to a 360 panoramic camera system to alert you in tricky situations. The sunroof gets power in the Prestige, as do the high beams - they turn on automatically when deemed necessary now. Not only are the seats covered in leather, but also the armrests and the center console for enhanced comfort. To further enhance comfort, you can heat the front seats. Safety feature upgrades include adaptive cruise control and a lane-keeping assistance tool, which alerts you when you’re drifting outside of your lane. If you travel on highways at high speeds often, you’ll notice that sound is reduced in this trim. That’s due to the specialized double-paned acoustic glass in the front windows, which absorbs sound far better than single-paned glass.

You can upgrade some specific features of the A4 Prestige, though there is no full package that upgrades everything at once. Features that can be upgraded include all-wheel drive via the Ultra package or individually, a heated steering wheel to pair with your heated front seats, and rear side airbags to enhance safety for backseat passengers.

Unless you absolutely need some of the technology upgrades of the Prestige trim, then you may be more inclined to pick the Premium Plus. If you don’t need heated front seats or lane assistance, then the extra price tag on the Prestige might be too much to budget for. On the other hand, if you absolutely want some of the upgraded features - such as the dual-pane acoustic glass and the leather armrests - then this is the trim for you.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to pick out a top trim from the three outstanding options from Audi. However, if you’re looking for the absolute best cost to utility ratio, then the Prestige Plus is likely your best option. This trim offers an outstanding number of features ranging from comfort and luxury to safety and technology, giving you the best of both worlds for not much more in price than the base Premium trim.

The Prestige trim is somewhat underwhelming, considering it does bump the price up by a significant amount. However, some of the features could be considered necessary if you drive on the highway a significant portion of the time - in that case, the Prestige might be the best choice.
