What 2020 Audi SQ5 Trim Level Should you Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

There are many reasons that SUVs have grown so popular. They often combine all of the things that families need. Going with a luxury SUV means getting comfort and sophistication on top of practicality and utility.

In 2020, Audi has made their already popular SQ5 even better. The Premium Plus now has gained a wireless charging pad as well as front and rear parking sensors. A cell phone signal booster, which couples a phone with the SQ5's antenna, is now standard for the Premium Plus and up. This feature is very useful when traveling through more remote areas. The popular high beam assist function was also added to the list of standard equipment for all trim levels.

Some vehicles offer drivers an overwhelming number of trim levels and variations. This is not the case here with the 2020 Audi SQ5, which has only three options. Still, with a base price range of over eight thousand dollars, picking the right trim is important. Being a luxury vehicle, all trim levels are relatively well-equipped.

In order to help consumers decide which trim will best suit their needs, this guide has been created to explain the differences. After reading it, buyers should feel better prepared to pick the version of the 2020 Audi SSQ5 that is best for their needs.

Compare the 2020 Audi SQ5 Premium vs Premium Plus Trims. What is the difference?

The first thing that drivers should be aware of when it comes to the SQ5 is that there is only one powertrain available. The Premium is powered by the same turbo 3.0L V6 that the Prestige trim is. Audi has paired this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SQ5 produces 349-horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Audi lists the top speed of the Audi SQ5 at 155 miles per hour. It can go from zero to 60 in just 5.1 seconds. The good news for families interested in this vehicle is that it also can tow up to 4,400 pounds when properly equipped. All-wheel-drive is standard on all trim levels of the 2020 SQ5.

The fuel economy of this vehicle is more than decent, especially considered the standard AWD. In the city, drivers can expect to get about 18 MPG. Taking it on the highway will give drivers 23 MPG. Ultimately, this gives the SQ5 a combined fuel efficiency rating of 20 MPG. These are government estimates and can be on the low side. Early test drives of this vehicle have seen drivers getting significantly better numbers.

Buyers will find that the SQ5 is designed to seat up to five people. With the rear seat up, this vehicle offers 25.1 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding down the rear seat will reveal up to 53.1 cubic feet. This is easy to do thanks to the 40/20/20 split-folding feature found standard on the rear seat of the SQ5. Many consumers find this setup to be more convenient than the more traditional 60/40 split.

The Premium trim level of the 2020 SQ5 sits on 20-inch wheels. It gets a full suite of LED illumination, with LED headlights and taillights. Also standard is dynamic headlight adjustment. The side mirrors are heated and power-adjustable. There is aluminum-optic trim found on these mirrors as well as around the windows. Helping to add to the utility of the vehicle are aluminum roof rails.

Other noteworthy exterior features include a power liftgate and an anti-theft car alarm system including motion sensors. Rear privacy glass is also part of the Premium model. Rounding out the exterior features is a roof-mounted spoiler.

Buyers will find the interior of the Premium to be quite upscale. Tri-zone automatic climate control, which includes controls for the second-row, is standard. The rearview mirror is auto-dimming and stylish ambient interior lighting is found inside the cabin. Heat-insulated glass helps to keep everyone comfortable in a variety of temperatures. A flat-bottomed steering wheel with paddle shifters is part of the standard equipment.

Seating is luxurious in the SQ5. The Premium trim has leather seating surfaces. For the driver, the seat has eight-way power adjustment and four-way power lumbar adjustment. The front seats are also heated. Both front seats get comfort head restraints, but consumers who want power-adjustment features for the front passenger will have to look elsewhere.

This trim level has a 7-inch touchscreen inside. It has the Audi smartphone interface, meaning it can work with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Controlling this system is also simple thanks to the standard voice recognition feature. Bluetooth can also be used to link a smartphone with the SQ5. A Homelink receiver comes standard, which gives consumers the ability to link their vehicle with their garage door or gate system. It can also work with select home security systems.

The sound system in this entry-level trim is impressive. Consumers get ten-speakers inside this Premium trim, as well as a six-channel amplifier. There are front USB ports that help drivers listen to their own music as well as keep their smart devices charged. HD radio technology is another standard feature here.

A decent number of driver aids are included with the Premium trim. This model has forward collision warning, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic high beams, low-speed automatic emergency braking, and hill descent control. The low-speed automatic braking works up until 52 miles per hour. If the vehicle is moving at 25 miles per hour or slower, this feature can potentially avoid a collision entirely. The SQ5 also has the obligatory rearview camera.

Buyers have the option of adding the Convenience package to the Premium trim level. This adds blind spot monitoring and auto-dimming exterior mirrors. Also added is satellite radio, keyless entry, and a memory feature for the driver's seat. It is easy to see how this package lives up to its name.

The Premium Plus trim level has everything the Premium does and then some. It looks pretty much the same on the outside but does gain a standard panoramic sunroof. The side mirrors also gain an auto-dimming feature as well as a memory function.

Inside is where shoppers will find most of the Premium Plus upgrades. The armrests are covered in a simulated leather. This trim also gets the impressive Audi virtual cockpit, which includes a color 12.3-inch LCD digital instrument cluster. Drivers can choose how this cluster looks by selecting one of the three available modes - classic, sport, or infotainment.

Navigation is standard for the Premium Plus models of the 2020 SQ5. What Audi calls its "phone box" is also included. This just means there is wireless charging plus the cell phone signal booster. The screen is bumped up from 7-inches to 8.3-inches inside of this trim. Satellite radio also is added to this infotainment system. Two USB ports are also added for back passengers.

Significant upgrades to the driver assistance features are made when moving up to the Premium Plus. It gets the parking system plus, which adds acoustic front and rear parking sensors. Also added is Audi side and rear assist features, which essentially act like blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert. There is also a vehicle exit warning function, which can be useful when having to park on the side of the street.

There are a few packages that are available for the Premium Plus and the Prestige trim level. The first is called the Cold Weather package, and it adds a heated steering wheel as well as heated rear seats. It also adds upgraded floor mats. On the other side of the spectrum is the Warm Weather package. This adds ventilation to the front seats and rear window shades. It also upgrades the leather upholstery.

Drivers can add the S Sport package. This is one way to actually tweak the performance of the SQ5 because it adds an air adaptive suspension system with adaptive ride height. It also adds a sports-tuned rear differential and red-painted brake calipers. To change the look of their SQ5, consumers can add the Black Optic package. With this, pretty much everything that was chrome on the exterior is painted black. It also gets unique looking wheels, although they stay the same size.

The Premium Plus trim costs four thousand dollars more than the Premium. Its upgraded safety and tech features make this seem relatively reasonable.

Compare the 2020 Audi SQ5 Premium Plus vs Prestige Trims. What is the difference?

For their final option, consumers are presented with the Prestige trim. This trim level is mechanically the same but quite impressive in many other ways. Dual-pane acoustic glass is added to the front windows, helping to make the cabin of the Prestige very relaxing.

Inside, drivers now can further customize their ambient lighting. The sound system gets a significant upgrade here. The Prestige rocks a nineteen-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system. This system comes with a 16-channel amplifier. The speakers were placed expertly in order to optimize the music-listening experience. LED accent lighting also works in conjunction with this stereo system, providing drivers and their passengers with an incredible experience for their ears and eyes.

The other area with significant additions is the standard driver aids. The Prestige trim gets active lane keep assist and a head's up display. This display, which has full-color, projects important information into the driver's line of sight in an attempt to reduce distractions. It can give a wide variety of data, including the vehicle status, infotainment info, and the next step in the navigation directions.

A park assist feature is also added at this trim level. It helps drivers to identify parking spots, either parallel or perpendicular. While the driver controls the throttle and braking, the park assist feature can then steer the SQ5 expertly into the open parking spot.

Also added by the Prestige is Audi adaptive cruise control with Traffic jam assist. When encountering congested traffic conditions, this feature can give the SQ5 braking, throttle, and steering input. The goal is to relieve some of the stress and pressure off of the driver in heavy traffic. Traffic sign recognition, which can read and then display relevant sign info, is the final driver assistance feature added.

The Prestige trim is about four thousand dollars more than the Premium Prestige. Whether or not it is worth it largely depends on which tech and advanced safety features are desired by the consumer.

Which Trim to Choose?

When it comes to the SQ5, less is more. The Premium trim level comes with plenty of comfort, tech, and convenience features. Adding the Convenience package will make this the perfect luxury SUV for a wide variety of consumers. Buyers should keep in mind that going with an upper trim does not upgrade the engine or performance of the 2020 SQ5 in any way.

Although the Premium Plus trim has its appeal, its most enticing extra features are taken care of by adding the Convenience package. As for the Prestige trim, its features seem more flashy than practical in many situations. Buyers are better off saving their money.

Consumers who go with the Premium trim with the Convenience package added will find they have made a good choice.
