What 2019 Cadillac XT5 Trim Level Should you Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

Cadillac's XT5 first rolled off of the assembly line in 2017. The 2019 model is still part of the first generation for this vehicle. The XT5 is a four-door crossover SUV with a rear hatch for the cargo area. It can comfortably seat up to five average-sized adults. It also provides a great amount of cargo space. You get 30 cubic feet of space with all of the seats in use. With the seats properly configured, the storage space can be increased to 63 cubic feet.

The interior space is generous for a vehicle in this class. The steering dynamics are tight and responsive. The ride quality is smooth and comfortable. Driving an XT5 feels more like driving a sedan than an SUV. Cadillac is known for its luxurious, comfortable interiors, and the XT5 doesn't disappoint in this category. This crossover SUV is versatile with a nice blend of luxury, convenience and utility features.

The 2019 Cadillac XT5 comes in four different trim levels. The Base, Luxury and Premium Luxury models are available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive versions. The Platinum level is only available in an all-wheel drive configuration. All four trims come equipped with a V-6 engine that can crank out around 310 horsepower. The transmission system is an an 8-speed automatic with an auto-manual setting. This allows you to still manually shift through the gears if you should ever need to.

The Cadillac XT5 offers pretty good fuel economy in its class. All four trim levels share the same fuel-economy rating. You can expect to get around 22 miles-per-gallon in combined city and highway driving. The XT5 can also tow a trailer or boat along for the ride. When properly outfitted, this SUV can pull around 3,500 pounds. The towing capacity is comparable to or better than most of the competition.

There isn't a major difference in performance between the four trim packages that are available. The differences lie in the features and options for each level. Each trim adds to what the previous level offered in a logical way. You never lose features, you just get new ones and upgrades for a modest cost increase. We will take a look at every trim level and how they compare to each other.

Compare the 2019 Cadillac XT5 Standard vs Luxury Trims. What is the difference?

Looking at the mechanical features, both trims come with the same engine and transmission system. You get anti-lock disc brakes with active control. Power steering, traction control and an auto start and stop feature are standard for both trims. The base model gives you a rear-parking assist. The Luxury trim adds on a front-parking assist as well. A trailering package can be added on to the Luxury trim.

Both trims come with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires. On the base XT5 these are multi-spoke, aluminum wheels with silver paint. The Luxury model upgrades this to machined-faced aluminum with some argent accents. You can opt for 20-inch wheels on either model. The outside mirrors are painted to match the body color on both trims. The Luxury trim are heated with a power-folding feature.

Both trims have a rear spoiler and a power-operated lift-gate. Cadillac throws in a tire-inflator package for every trim level. There are a number of exterior options for both models of the XT5. Some of the notable ones include roof rails and a trailer-hitch cover. One of the biggest differences for the exteriors is that the Luxury trim adds on a power sunroof.

On the inside, you get 6-way power adjustments for the front seats in the base XT5. The Luxury model gives you 8-way adjustable seats and lumbar support with 2-way power adjustment. The Luxury package also gives you heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. It also offers a memory feature that allows you to save settings for the seats, steering column and outside mirrors.

Cadillac provides a Premium Bose Sound System for both models here. You get eight speakers with the option for a fourteen-speaker, surround-sound system on the Luxury trim. A 5.7-inch, color display gives you vital driver information for both models. Both also offer a 4G WiFi hotspot. The Luxury package gives you a number of warning systems and driver-assist programs that aren't found on the Standard XT5.

For the Luxury trim you get Cadillac's Driver Awareness Package. There's an alert to warn you of impending front collisions. Another alert lets you know if you wander too far outside of your lane. A Lane-Keeping Assist program makes minor adjustments to get you back to where you should be. Front Pedestrian Braking makes sure you don't have an unfortunate accident when someone walks across your path. A Following-Distance Indicator makes sure you maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

A Rear Cargo Management System for the Luxury model helps you to keep your cargo organized. Dual-climate control comes standard on both trims to keep you comfortable. Remote start is also standard for both models of the XT5. Cadillac adds on their Teen-Driver system for every trim level. This allows you to monitor your teen's driving habits.

Every trim level of the XT5 comes equipped with a good amount of safety features. Seven airbags come standard on the base and Luxury trim packages. You get OnStar emergency services and crisis alert with all models of this SUV. OnStar can even give you turn-by-turn directions and hook you up with roadside assistance. A rear-vision camera is included with both trims. A rear-seat reminder prevents you from forgetting young occupants in the back of your SUV.

Compare the 2019 XT5 Luxury vs Premium Luxury Trims. What is the difference?

Moving up from the Luxury model, we come to the Premium Luxury trim level. The first functional difference between these trims is in the suspension system. The suspension gets an upgrade for the Premium Luxury. This real-time damping system makes adjustments every two milliseconds. Cadillac even allows you to customize the feel of this suspension system when you purchase a Premium Luxury model.

On the outside of the Premium Luxury, the wheels get upgraded to 20-inch models. These are painted for a sterling-silver finish. Once again, you get all-season tires for this trim. Front cornering lamps and illuminated door handles are added on for the Luxury Premium. Most of the remaining exterior features are the same between these two versions of the XT5.

On the inside of the XT5, the seat adjustments and options are the same for these two models. The Premium Luxury includes the upgraded, fourteen-speaker sound system by Bose. A navigation system and extra USB ports are added in as well. You even get a couple of extra auxiliary power outlets with this move up in trim packages.

Lighting accents and a tri-zone, climate-control system are added on at this level. This gives you even more control over the interior climate than before with the dual-zone setup. The included safety features are the same for the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims. The Premium gives you a few extra options here such as automatic braking and emergency seat-belt tightening.

Compare the XT5 Premium Luxury vs Platinum Trims. What is the difference?

On the Platinum model, you get 20-inch wheels made of fully polished aluminum. You now get a couple of options for what type of wheel and tire you wish for the XT5 to come equipped with. An advanced-security package is included with this trim level. You get a locking steering column, locking wheel lugs and an inclination sensor. An alarm system is also included.

The driver-assist package that was optional for the Premium Luxury model now comes standard on the Platinum. A power lift-gate allows for hands-free operation for easier loading and unloading of cargo. On the inside of the Platinum, the driver-info screen gets upgraded to an 8-inch model. You get the premium Bose sound system as standard equipment for this trim package.

A rear-view camera is located on the interior mirror for the Platinum model. Surround Vision allows you to check out the potential blind-spots around your vehicle. Forward and reverse automatic braking gets added on. You once again get all of the perks of the OnStar system that was already available for the Premium Luxury trim. Most of the remaining safety and security features are the same between these two trims.

Final Thoughts

Since all of the models come with the same power train, this comes down to which features you want the most. The performance, fuel economy and handling are all roughly the same between these four trim packages. For most drivers, the Premium Luxury will likely be the choice of trim levels for the 2019 Cadillac XT5.

This trim level has all of the most desirable features when it comes to safety, convenience and comfort. Most of the extras from the Platinum model can be added on as an option if there are one or two things you just can't live without. The Premium Luxury isn't that much more than the Luxury model when it comes to price. For all of the added features you get, this makes the Premium Luxury trim an excellent value.
