What 2019 Chevrolet Traverse Trim Level Should you Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

One year removed from its redesign in 2018, the Traverse continues to intrigue buyers in the midsize SUV category. It seats a maximum of eight passengers with even the third row seating ample enough for full sized people. The ample interior space translates into some of the best cargo capacity of any vehicle in the category.

The Traverse comes in six different trim levels, and the large range in price tags between the lower and higher trim levels complicates the buying process for many people looking to get the right vehicle for their needs. To add more complication, the Traverse has an optional turbo charged four cylinder engine at one trim level as well as optional all wheel drive on most trim levels. The seating capacity also changes from trim level to trim level.

This guide is designed to assist buyers in narrowing down the decisions to a select few trim levels. The buying process can be confusing enough without worrying about having confidence in decisions on trim levels.

Compare the 2019 Traverse L vs LS Trims. What is the difference?

The Chevrolet Traverse L has one seating configuration. The L features two secondary rows of three passenger bench seats. The maximum number of passengers for the L is eight, and all passengers are provided with premium cloth seating that is Jet Back with Jet Black accents.

The base engine is the only option for all trim levels except the RS. It is a 310 horsepower V6 that gets 18 miles per gallon on the highway and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. The engine is equipped with auto stop/start capabilities to improve fuel efficiency.

The L is also only available with front wheel drive. Buyers gain access to all wheel drive capabilities at all other trim levels. For the budget minded buyer, the FWD system is a capable choice. The L is also equipped with Stabilitrac with Traction Control.

The L may be the cheapest Traverse, but it has some feature that make it a value added base model. The Traverse L is equipped with standard backup camera and TeenDriver capabilities. It also features a seven inch touch screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth capability. The Traverse L also has steering wheel mounted controls for vehicle features. The Traverse L also comes standard with built in WiFi Hotspot that supports up to seven devices.

Passengers are also set up to enjoy the journey with tri-zone climate control, six USB charging ports and ten cup holders.

The basic appearance package that comes with the L trim level includes HID headlamps and LED daytime running lights. The Traverse L also has black body side moldings and mirrors. The mirrors are power adjustable and heated. The Traverse L also has rear seat reminder, which helps remind the driver to check the back seats anytime after the rear door is opened.

The Traverse L makes a smart choice for buyers looking to get a deal on a midsize SUV. It has a lower than average starting price compared to other vehicles in the mid sized SUV category.

There are not a lot of differences between the L and the LS. The LS includes the standard features of the L and also includes deep tinted window glass.

The LS also offers available options that are not options on the L. The LS can be upgraded to AWD for $2,000. It also offers optional appearance upgrades like 20" wheels and tires.

Compare the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse LS vs LT Cloth Trims. What is the difference?

While the LS and the L are very similar, the trim levels get more complicated with the LT. The LT is actually divided into two categories. The LT is divided into the LT Cloth (LT1) and LT Leather (LT3) trim categories. While the defining difference is the seating material, there are many differences in these trim levels so they are separated.

The LT Cloth Trim level includes two new interior colors. The LT Cloth comes standard with either Medium Ash Gray or Dark Galvanized premium cloth seats in addition to the Jet Black option. It also comes standard with seating for seven passengers. While the two rows of bench seats is an option on the LT Cloth, the standard seating configuration is a second row of two bucket chairs.

The driver seat is also upgraded to power adjustment and lumbar support, while the steering wheel is leather wrapped.

The appearance of the LT Cloth changes slightly. It incorporates body color mirrors with turn signal indicators instead of black mirrors. It also comes equipped with fog lamps and a roof rack.

The LT Cloth also offers some premium upgrades. It can be equipped with optional trailer brake controller. The Traverse has a 5,000 lb towing capacity at all trim levels and the trailer brake is optional at all but the L trim level. It is standard at the top trim level.

The LT Cloth can be upgraded to include some impressive tech features with the Convenience and Driver Confidence Package. This package includes driver tech features such as lane change assistance with blind spot alert, rear cross traffic alert and rear park assist. This package also upgrades the infotainment system to an eight inch touchscreen and adds an upgraded 4.2 inch multi-color driver information display. The conveniences in this package include a universal home remote and remote vehicle start in addition to a programmable power lift gate.

Compare the Traverse LT Cloth vs LT Leather Trims. What is the difference?

The LT Cloth adds some options for buyers looking to expand the features of the Traverse. The LT Leather takes another step forward to add all of the features of the Convenience and Driver Confidence Package to every LT Leather Traverse.

It also has more interior options with all three colors available with leather material. The front passenger seat is also upgraded to include power adjust capabilities. The front row of seats is also heated. It is the last trim level that offers optional eight passenger seating.

Additional upgrades include a power sunroof and rear camera mirror. The rear camera mirror increases driver visibility by using a camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle to project an image of the area behind the vehicle onto the rear view mirror. It eliminates the need for the driver to look around people and cargo that may be blocking the view in the standard rear view mirror. The Traverse LT Leather can also include a birds eye view of the surroundings of the vehicle with Surround Vision.

The rear camera mirror and Surround Vision is available in the LT Premium package that also includes a 10 speaker Bose sound system. The premium package also includes navigation and a 120 volt power outlet.

Compare the Traverse LT Leather vs RS Trims. What is the difference?

The Traverse LT Leather has multiple interior color options and special add-on packages to enhance its capabilities, but the RS loses the interior options and offers an exciting engine option. It also includes most of the available options on the LT Leather.

The biggest difference between the RS and every other Traverse is the standard turbocharged four cylinder engine. The turbo boost that comes from the RS makes for a more exciting driving experience. It is standard on the RS, but buyers can also opt for the standard V6. Many will have to choose between the exciting turbo four cylinder and front wheel drive and the V6 with AWD, because the turbo four does not come paired with AWD.

The RS also has a different appearance with a black Chevrolet emblem on the grill and black accents all around the exterior. It also comes with 20" Dark Android painted aluminum wheels.

The Traverse RS comes equipped with the LS Premium package and the Convenience and Driver Confidence package.

Compare the 2019 Traverse RS vs Premier Trims. What is the difference?

While the RS incorporates a more exciting engine and distinctive appearance, the Premier reverts back to the standard V6 and expands the interior seating color options back to three.

The seating configuration is still limited to seven passengers, but the Premier features perforated leather seating and ventilated front seats. It also adds a heated steering wheel.

The appearance of the Premier differs greatly from the RS. While the RS incorporates black accents on the exterior, the Premier adds chrome grille, wheel and body accents for a more premium look.

The Premier also offers an additional appearance package called the Redline. The Redline incorporates a lot more gloss black accents with some red accents and darker taillights thrown in for good measure.

The base Premium trim level includes standard hands free lift gate with ground illumination behind the vehicle. It also incorporates LED projector beam headlights and auto dimming driver rear view mirror.

The Traverse Premium can also be upgraded to the Driver Confidence II package. This package includes automatic high beams, forward collision warning and automatic braking. The driver is also provided with lane keep assist and a following distance indicator.

Compare the 2019 Traverse Premier vs High Country Trims. What is the difference?

The Premier trim adds a distinctive appearance and the hands free lift gate to the Traverse's list of amenities. The High Country takes the Traverse experience to the highest point available.

It has a distinctive chrome grill and adds an exclusive Loft Brown premium leather interior with Jet Black accents. The Loft Brown color is standard on the High Country.

The power train of the High Country is also upgraded. It features a standard AWD system that has automatic locking rear differentials and dual clutch technology. It also comes standard with the towing package.

The top billed Traverse High Country comes equipped with all available driver technology that is optional on lower trim levels. It also adds adaptive cruise control and a power folding third row bench seat.

Final Thoughts

The Chevrolet Traverse has excellent standard features and a good base model. The Traverse L costs just under $30,000, which is a low starting point for any midsize SUV. Buyers can be confident they made a good decision with the Traverse L. It has the basic features of a quality vehicle at a low price point. It is also one of the few trim levels that offers seating for eight.

The Traverse also makes a smart buy at the Traverse LT Cloth trim level. It offers access to most of the best features of the Traverse. Buyers can get AWD, the Convenience and Driver Confidence package and all the makings of an elevated daily driving vehicle. The cloth seats are premium and probably a smarter buy for buyers with families. This trim level also keeps the vehicle price at a manageable level for thrifty buyers. Buyers looking to upgrade to AWD capabilities are probably better off opting for the LT Leather trim due to pricing of AWD at those trim levels.

The higher trim levels are also packed with great features and have a lower than average price compared to other vehicles in the category. Buyers will still be better off with the LT trim level in most cases.
