2022 Honda Odyssey Trim Levels, Configurations & Comparisons: LX vs EX, EX-L vs Touring and Elite

Compare the 2022 Honda Odyssey Trims - LX vs EX, EX-L vs Touring and Elite. What is the difference between them?

Minivans may no longer be the king of the family vehicles, but that does not stop a few brands from entering into this segment of the market. For some families, nothing beats the practicality and convenience of one of these vehicles. Unfortunately, there are fewer options than before.

The Honda Odyssey is a heavy-hitter in the dwindling minivan game. It comes with a respectable number of standard features and is decently powerful. The versatility of the Odyssey is a major selling point for families as well. At the same time, this vehicle is not terribly efficient and currently offers no hybrid variation. All-wheel drive is still not an option, either.

There have been very few changes for the 2022 Honda Odyssey, which is part of the fifth generation that debuted back in 2018. The integrated vacuum cleaner has been deleted from the options list. A decent number of changes were made for a mini-refresh in 2021, including the addition of a suite of standard safety features, so it is not surprising that the Odyssey stays more or less the same for 2022.

Compare the LX vs EX Trims. What is the difference?

The 2022 Honda Odyssey LX is powered by the same engine as the rest of the lineup. Underneath the hood lives a 3.5L V6 that generates 280-horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard for all models as well, along with front-wheel drive. All models are estimated to get 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which does not quite keep up with some of the Odyssey's competitors. Properly equipped models can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Seating for seven is standard for the LX. This is the only trim that does not have the option of seating for eight. The driver's seat does have eight-way power adjustment, while the front passenger gets four-way power adjustment. Automatic climate control is included for the LX, along with push-button start.

Convenience features are numerous for the entry-level Odyssey LX. A rear storage well, cargo area bag hooks, and illuminated steering-wheel-mounted controls are all standard. There are also handy cupholders in all three rows. Drivers can take advantage of one-touch turn signal indicators, and the vanity mirrors for the driver and front passenger are illuminated. A rear-window defroster and rear-seat heating ducts are perfect for chillier mornings on the road.

One area that the LX definitely falls behind the rest of the lineup is technology. The entry-level model has only a 5-inch color LCD screen. There are no smartphone integration tools, but Bluetooth is standard. Drivers get only one USB port, which is located in the center console.

Exterior feature highlights include LED headlights with auto-off, rear privacy glass, and remote entry. A roofline spoiler with integrated brake light is standard for the LX, along with taillights featuring integrated LED light bars. The LX will be the only version of the 2022 Odyssey with black side mirrors.

Honda Sensing is standard for the LX on up. This means all models of the Odyssey have forward-collision warning, a road departure mitigation system, lane departure warning, and a collision mitigation braking system. Other driver assistance features are found on all models, including adaptive cruise control, a lane-keeping assist system, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Rear parking sensors can be added for approximately $500 more.

The Odyssey LX also has several standard active safety features. They include vehicle stability assist with traction control, electronic brake distribution, and brake assist. All models are equipped with LED daytime running lights along with a tire pressure monitoring system complete with location and pressure indicators.

Major upgrades are seen when drivers go up to the 2022 Odyssey EX. It is mechanically the same, although it does add a remote start feature to its standard equipment list. The cabin gets nice extras like tri-zone automatic climate control. A multi-function center seat for the second-row is also included, bringing the seating capacity up to eight. For the driver, the power adjustment goes up to 12-way and there is four-way power lumbar support. Heated front seats are thrown in as well, further adding to the appeal of the EX over the LX. A heated steering wheel is optional and costs approximately $500.

The cargo space remains the same between the LX and EX. That said, it is much easier to make the most of the space with the EX level and higher, thanks to the versatile second-row of seating. Behind the third-row, there is up to 38.6 cubic feet. The third-row folds flat, revealing 92.3 cubic feet. The second row of seats must be removed to achieve the maximum cargo capacity, which measures 158 cubic feet. In the EX trim and those above it, the second row can be maneuvered instead to help drivers create the right amount of space for both their passengers and their gear.

An 8-inch touchscreen is standard for the Odyssey EX. The touch controls are easy to learn and use. This trim level also gains Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with SiriusXM and HD radio. The EX gets blind-spot monitoring along with rear cross-traffic alert in addition to all of the high-tech safety features found on the LX model. This means that the EX trim level has all of the driver aids available for the Odyssey in 2022. The rearview camera even upgrades to "dynamic guidelines" rather than the standard ones found on the LX.

On the outside of the EX, the Odyssey has heated side mirrors with turn signal integration. The black door handles found on the LX are replaced by chrome ones for a bit more flash, and the side mirrors are body-colored. LED fog lights join the standard equipment list, along with handy power-sliding side doors.

Compare the EX vs EX-L Trims. What is the difference?

The EX-L sits in the middle of the trim list. Leather trim is added to the upholstery in the first and second rows, and the driver seat gets memory settings. The front passenger also gets an upgrade, gaining eight-way power adjustment and power lumbar support. A leather-wrapped steering wheel helps elevate the cabin of the EX-L. This model also gets an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

On the tech front, second-row USB ports are added. For the exterior, the EX-L gains a one-touch power moonroof. There is also a programmable power liftgate that lets drivers set the height it will open to. The EX-L makes the drive more relaxing by adding acoustic glass to the windshield.

There are several available features for the EX-L model. The heated steering wheel for $500 is one, and a wireless device charger for $300 is another. This model is also eligible for a hands-free power liftgate, provided that buyers are willing to pay an extra $300.

Compare the EX-L vs Touring. What is the difference?

When it comes to the Touring, the cabin looks very similar to the EX-L. The main addition is blue ambient interior lighting, which gives the Odyssey a more high-tech feel. This is appropriate because the Touring earns its higher price tag with a considerable amount of tech upgrades.

The first major addition is a rear-seat entertainment system. It comes with built-in streaming apps, a Blu-Ray player, and two pairs of wireless headphones. CabinTalk, Honda's in-cabin PA system is added as well. CabinWatch, which allows parents to monitor the back seats on the infotainment screen, is added for the Touring, giving parents more peace of mind when at the wheel.

Passengers in the third row benefit from the addition of USB ports. An integrated navigation system is added by this trim level as well. Rounding out the tech upgrades is an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot that will keep everyone connected and entertained when traveling.

Both front and rear parking sensors are standard for the 2022 Odyssey Touring. They give audible and visual alerts when the vehicle gets too close to obstacles at low speeds. Otherwise, the safety features are identical to the models that came before it. Both the wireless charging pad and hands-free power liftgate are available for a bit extra when drivers choose the Touring.

Compare the Touring vs Elite Trims. What is the difference?

King of the 2022 Odyssey models is the Elite. This is the only model to give drivers both heated and ventilated front rows seats. The steering wheel is heated as well. That blue ambient interior lighting found in the Touring is taken to the next level in the Elite, which adds it to the instrument panel.

A wireless phone charger is standard for the Elite, making it easier to keep the cabin free of clutter. The other major upgrade involves the sound system, which goes up to 11 speakers. All other models have seven-speaker setups. The Elite also adds a subwoofer. The CabinTalk system gets an upgrade for the Elite as well. In the Touring, the PA system only plays through the wireless headphones. For the Elite model, parents can be heard through the speaker system as well.

The exterior of the Elite has a few key differences when compared to the Touring. One major upgrade that Honda reserved for this top trim is a standard hands-free function for the tailgate. The Touring model also has the acoustic glass for the side and rear windows, further adding to the peace and quiet inside the cabin. For the side mirrors, they gain both power-folding and auto-dimming features. The windshield wipers are automatic for the top Odyssey, too, which can come in handy when the weather suddenly takes a turn for the worse.

Final Thoughts

There really is no version of the 2022 Honda Odyssey that is not well-equipped. There are plenty of safety features to be found on all models, and they all utilize the same powertrain. That said, moving up to the middle trim levels does have some major advantages.

For most families, the EX is going to be where it is at. It brings the important tech upgrades to the table, and it gains the popular blind-spot monitoring feature. It also brings the seating capacity up to eight, which can be handy in a pinch even if it is not necessary for daily life. The EX-L does not add enough to justify the hike in price. While some families may want the features added by Touring or Elite, these models are significantly more expensive and add primarily bells and whistles to the minivan.

The 2022 Honda Odyssey EX gives buyers a lot of value for their money and is the right choice for the majority of buyers.
