The Toyota GR Supra is a legendary sports car when it comes to performance and style. the latest 2021 models look to continue that legacy. This sleek-looking car offers some of the best performance stats in the history of Toyota. It offers two different power trains, an inline four-cylinder and an inline six-cylinder. Both are turbocharged for more horsepower and better efficiency.
The latest Supra comes in three different trim levels. There is also one special edition for 2021. Any model you choose here will be a blast to drive. Compare the 2021 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 vs 3.0 Trims. What is the difference?
The 2.0 trim level is the base model of the Toyota GR Supra. It is powered by a 2.0-liter, twin-scroll, single-turbo, inline-four engine. This power plant can produce an impressive 255 horsepower with 295 pound-feet of torque. This is an astounding amount of power for a small, lightweight sports car. This model can get you to 60 miles-per-hour in just 5 seconds flat.
The 2.0 model offers the best fuel economy of the bunch. Drivers should see around 25 miles-per-gallon in the city and 32 miles-per-gallon on the highway. That makes for a combined rating of 28 miles-per-gallon.
The 2.0-liter engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The base model gets paddle shifters on the steering wheel. There's also a standard shifter with manual mode and a special launch mode. Launch mode is intended for the race track and can get your GR Supra up to speed in the shortest amount of time.
All models of the GR Supra share the same basic suspension system. You'll have MacPherson double-jointed struts up front. There's a multi-link, independent suspension in the rear. The 2.0 has ventilated, rotor-type brakes. Specifically, these are single-piston, aluminum, floating-caliber disc brakes.
On the outside of the 2.0 trim, the GR Supra gets 18-inch aluminum wheels. These have a sharp, 10-spoke design with a dual-tone finish. The exterior mirrors get a glossy black paint job. All models have a built-in rear spoiler. The 2.0 has dual, stainless-steel exhaust tips.
All models of the GR Supra get LED headlights with three high levels and three low levels. The headlights are auto-leveling. The taillights and turn signals on the 2.0 are LED as well.
On the inside of the 2.0, drivers and passengers will get 8-way, manually adjustable seats with 4-way lumbar support and a 2-way bolster adjustment. This trim offers Black Alcantara leather-trimmed sports seats. The steering wheel comes wrapped in leather. The interior trim has a cool carbon-fiber motif.
Every trim package comes equipped with an 8.8-inch digital, LCD gauge cluster. The 2.0 trim also offers an 8.8-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment center. It comes stock with a 4-speaker audio system, though this can be upgraded. The stereo offers digital audio, AM/FM radio and SirusXM compatibility. USB and Bluetooth connectivity is available to play music from your phone and other devices.
The 2.0 offers a lot of convenience features. There's an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a built-in garage-door opener. Also included is Toyota's Smart Key System with Smart Entry and Start. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard across all models of the GR Supra.
The windshield wipers on the 2.0 automatically sense rain and engage when needed. This trim gives you a DC12V power outlet and a USB port for charging of smartphones and other devices. Cruise control is standard on all trims as is Toyota's TRAC traction-control system.
Every trim level of the 2021 Toyota GR Supra shares many of the same safety features and equipment. All have the Toyota Advanced Airbag System for the driver and front passenger. This includes front, side curtain and knee airbags. All trim levels also offer 3-point seat belts for all seating positions.
Toyota has equipped every model of the GR Supra with Hill Start Assist Control. There's also a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. A Lane-Departure Warning with Steering Assist helps keep you safely in your own space. A Tire-Pressure Monitor helps ensure that your tires will always be inflated to a safe level.
A Rear-View Camera with Parking-Line Aids makes backing up and parking a whole lot easier. Automatic High Beams make sure that the driver always has a good view of whatever is up ahead. Every trim level of the GR Supra also gets Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-Lock Brakes and a Child-Restraint System on the passenger side.
When moving up to the 3.0 model, the biggest change is in the engine and overall performance of the GR Supra. This model is outfitted with a 3.0-liter inline 6 cylinder with dual overhead cams, 24 valves and a single turbocharger. This powerhouse makes 382 horsepower with 368 pound-feet of torque.
The 3.0-liter I-6 can go from 0 to 60 miles-per-hour in an impressive 3.9 seconds. The fuel-economy ratings aren't too far off from those of the base engine. It should get around 22 miles-per-gallon in the city and 30 miles-per-gallon on the highway for a combined rating of 25 miles-per-gallon.
The 3.0 comes equipped with the same 8-speed transmission system as before. You still get the paddle shifters on the steering wheel and the launch mode for quick acceleration. New for this model is an active rear sport differential. The suspension system shares many of the same parts as the 2.0 but gets upgraded with an Adaptive Variable Sport setup.
Another mechanical upgrade for the 3.0 can be found in the brakes. The 3.0 gets Brembo 4-piston, fixed-caliper disc brakes up front. On the outside of the 3.0, you'll find some bigger, 19-inch aluminum wheels. These are twin-spoke wheels with a dual-tone finish. The tires are upgraded as well to a set of high performance Michelin Pilot Super Sports.
The 3.0 gets upgraded exterior mirrors that fold in and offer a memory feature. They come in a matte black this time as opposed to the glossy finish on the 2.0 mirrors. The rear spoiler and LED lights all make a return for the 3.0 trim level. The exhaust tips now come in a brushed stainless-steel finish.
On the inside of the 3.0, owners will enjoy power-adjustable seats with 14 positions. 4-way lumbar support and 2-way bolster adjustments are again offered. These seats also give you a nice memory feature. This comes in handy when multiple drivers use the car and can quickly recall their perfect seat positions.
Many of the convenience features are the same between these two models. One nice upgrade is to the sound system. The 3.0 comes with a 10-speaker setup with 205 watts of power. The infotainment centers and display screens are otherwise the same as before. The 3.0 has all of the same driver assists and safety features as the 2.0.
Compare the 2021 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 vs 3.0 Premium Trims. What is the difference?
The 3.0 Premium is exactly what it sounds like. It's a 3.0 trim with a bunch of extras and special perks. You get the same exact engine and transmission system as before. The steering, braking and suspension systems are all the same. Performance is identical between these two models.
While the brakes are operationally the same, there is one nice cosmetic difference. The front calipers on the 3.0 Premium are sporting a cool Toyota Supra logo. Front and rear brake calipers are painted a striking red color. The wheels and tires remain the same for the 3.0 Premium.
The rest of the exterior features remain the same between these two trim levels. On the inside of the 3.0 Premium, you'll see the same seat-adjustment options as before but this time with upgraded upholstery. The 3.0 Premium comes with black-leather sports seats. The seats are now heated as well. The pedals also get upgraded to a set of sportier models.
The audio systems get yet another upgrade for the Premium model. This time it's a 12-speaker system by JBL with 500 watts of power. The infotainment system gets Toyota's Supra Command with a navigation system, voice recognition and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
The upgraded infotainment system also now offers Toyota's Supra Connect. This gives drivers access to weather and traffic information, emergency calling, Toyota concierge services and a whole host of online services. There's also a Qi-compatible wireless charging station.
All of the safety features and driver-assist technologies found on the 3.0 once again can be found on the 3.0 Premium.
Compare the 2021 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Premium vs A91 Edition. What is the difference?
The A91 model of the 2021 Toyota GR Supra is actually more of a special edition than a full-blown trim level. It will be limited to a run of only 1,000 cars. There are no performance upgrades here, this model is all about the cosmetics and convenience features. The A91 shares the exact same engine, transmission system, brakes and suspension as the 3.0 Premium.
Performance is the exact same between these two models, as are the fuel-economy ratings. One noticeable change to the exterior is the black, rear-lip spoiler on the A91 Edition. There are some model-exclusive colors for this special edition. They can be had in Refraction, which is a metallic blue, or Nocturnal, which is a blacked-out look.
The A91 Edition has some unique striping and decal work for the exterior. The wheels get a matte-black finish and the exterior mirrors have a dark carbon-fiber finish. On the inside, the A91 Edition has blue stitching throughout the black upholstery and other materials.
As usual, the A91 Edition has the same safety features and driver-assist tech as the previous models. All of the convenience features of the 3.0 Premium make their return here as well.
Which Trim to Choose?
It's a safe bet that whoever is looking at the 2021 Toyota GR Supra prioritizes performance in their vehicles. This car is one of the sportiest, most athletic vehicles on the road today. While the base model should appease just about anyone's appetite for speed, why not go all out and move up to at least the 3.0 level? It's just one spot up with only a modest increase in price. And best of all, it offers the same exact performance stats as the highest trim levels that Toyota has to offer.
For most drivers, going for the 3.0 or 3.0 Premium will be your best bet. The 3.0 is a nice choice if you just care about speed and performance. If you want a little bit more and enjoy your music loud while on the road, the Premium upgrades will make a lot of sense. The upgrade to the infotainment system alone will be well worth the increase to cost for many drivers.
