When weighing your options for which new vehicle to buy in 2023, pause and give the 2023 Toyota RAV4 some consideration. Even if you are not in the market for a strong off-roading SUV, the RAV4 might appeal to you with its user-friendly controls in the cockpit, serene and relaxed ride quality, and spacious interior design. As part of the fifth generation of the RAV4, which was launched onto the market back in 2019, the 2023 RAV4 has a lot to offer the right buyer.
While the RAV4 may be a favorite among city-dwellers, its lack of acceleration power might give drivers pause when hitting the highway. Boasting a mere 203 horsepower and 0 to 60 time of over 9 seconds from its four cylinder engine, it falls short in comparison with other SUVs on performance capabilities.
Despite its promise of agility, the 2023 RAV4's steering leaves much to be desired. Its lack of heft and feedback make it difficult for drivers to accurately gauge how hard they must turn in order to stay on course; a miscalculation that could lead potentially hazardous outcomes.
With the 2023 Toyota RAV4, you have a variety of options when it comes to trim levels. From its base LE model, through an off-road focused TRD Off-Road option and up to its high specification Limited edition - each iteration offers something different that may suit your lifestyle needs. To help determine which one best fits what you are looking for in terms of value and features offerings, let's take some time to explore all six available trims.
Compare the RAV4 LE vs XLE. What is the difference?
First up we have the 2023 RAV4's base trim, which is named the LE. The LE comes with kicks things off with a set of LED headlights on the front fascia and four 17-inch wheels to ride around on. As already mentioned, it is powered by the standard 203-hp four-cylinder engine, so you don't get much choice there. This engine comes matched up to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which helps supply power to the front wheels on all trims save for the Adventure and TRD Off-Road. On those two trim levels, all-wheel drive is standard issue.
As far as tech goes, there is a good amount of features in the base trim. An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen display comes equipped inside of the cabin, and you can easily use smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which offer wireless connectivity for less cord clutter. For your music listening needs, there is a six-speaker audio system included with the LE.
Toyota outfits each of its RAV4 trim levels with a suite of standard advanced driver aids called Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. In this bundle, you get automatic high beam headlights, a feature that can read traffic signs, and adaptive cruise control, which allows you to set a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of the RAV4 and adapts to changes in traffic flow. Also, you get forward collision warning with automatic braking, which means the system can detect potential frontal collisions and apply the brakes in order to avoid them. There is a lane keeping system that will steer the RAV4 back into the center of its intended driving lane if the system detects the wheels straying over the line.
The offerings on the base LE trim level might not be enough for you, so you might want to think about upgrading to the XLE trim level. Convenience features are the central focus on this trim level, given that it includes extra USB ports and keyless ignition and entry (which make getting the RAV4 started up a whole lot easier).
The XLE has a power adjustable driver's seat, so finding a comfy driving position is even easier. A dual-zone automatic climate control lets you set two different temperatures for the vehicle's zones, and the system will automatically adjust if the temps drop too low or surge too high.
There is one driver aid that gets added to the XLE trim level. The blind-spot monitor lets you know if there is a vehicle driving in your blind spot when you go to change lanes.
Compare the XLE vs XLE Premium Trims. What is the difference?
If you are looking to upgrade even further, the XLE Premium is a little bit fancier than the standard XLE trim level. On the XLE Premium, you benefit from the addition of LED fog lights embedded into the front fascia. Also, you get upgraded to bigger 19-inch wheels. The suspension is raised a little bit for a different ride quality, and there is a sunroof up top.
What comes inside of the XLE Premium though? It mostly looks the same as the XLE, save for the swapping in of synthetic leather upholstery, which Toyota calls SofTex. It is breathable and gives an enhanced sense of luxury to the RAV4.
Compare the XLE Premium vs Adventure. What is the difference?
The Adventure trim level foregoes some of the XLE Premium trim level's features in favorite of a more off-road oriented approach to the RAV4. It ditches the XLE Premium's power liftgate and sunroof. However, it creates a more rugged appearance geared toward off-roading.
Of course, there are also quite a few extra mechanical specs included on this trim level. Hill descent control comes on this trim level, and that means you get more traction when you need it while going on a downhill trek. The body features some fender flares and roof rails with a lifted height to them. The three standard drive train modes let you choose between SPORT mode (which gives the RAV4 swifter acceleration), NORMAL mode, and ECO mode (for better fuel efficiency). However, on this trim, you also get a helpful Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) dial with MUD and SAND modes, ROCK and DIRT modes, and SNOW mode. This trim level also comes with a dynamic torque vectoring AWD system outfitted with a rear driveline disconnect function.
Compare the Adventure vs TRD Off-Road. What is the difference?
If you're looking for an off-road adventure, then the TRD Off-Road trim level is well worth considering. Outfitted with all terrain tires on 18 inch wheels and a suspension specifically tuned to take rough roads in stride, this ride offers impressive performance when your travels turn away from paved highways. You'll benefit from improved responsiveness on regular roads too - so get ready for some serious fun.
The stylish RAV4 TRD Off-Road offers exclusivity with its exclusive trim elements for an elevated driving experience. Inside, luxurious blacked out touches and a 10.25" infotainment touchscreen entice passengers to relax in opulence while cruising the streets or conquering off road adventures.
Compare the TRD Off-Road vs Limited Trim Levels. What is the difference?
Perhaps you do not want an off-roading SUV as much as you want something that borders on luxury status. If that is the case, then the line-topping Limited trim level might appeal to you.
Inside of the Limited's cabin is where you will find the most significant changes, starting with the seats. The front passenger's seat gains power adjustability so that your front seat rider can get comfy without any hassle. Both front seats gain heating and ventilation functions, which can come in handy on cooler or warmer (respectively) days.
In the cockpit, there is a digital instrumentation panel that displays readouts of all your vehicle's important driving data. The 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen display is also equipped on the Limited trim level, providing you with crisp, easy-to-read graphic layouts that take little effort to learn to navigate. On top of all that, you gain a 11-speaker premium JBL sound system that pumps audio throughout the cabin without any disturbances.
With the 2023 Toyota RAV4, you have maximum freedom and flexibility when it comes to customizing your vehicle experience. While no packages are available with this model, there is an abundance of add-on features designed exclusively for personalization purposes - just make sure not to go overboard on too many options or else risk a hefty price increase.
The RAV4 offers some enticing optional features, from the practical to the luxurious. For improved visibility on even your most heavily laden trips, you have a digital rearview mirror that lets you see clearly out of its spacious cargo area. Charge up with ease using its wireless charging pad or indulge in added comfort and convenience through available add-ons such as a heated steering wheel and panoramic sunroof - though space in the backseat may be slightly reduced! Further elevate your awareness with an advanced 360-degree surround view camera system for maximum situational clarity no matter where you go.
Final Thoughts
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is a stellar choice for a small, off-road oriented SUV. It does not go too heavy on features, but for the cost, it gets the right amount of them on each trim level. The only downside to this vehicle is that underpowered engine underneath the RAV4's hood. Otherwise, it makes for a pleasant drive.
That being said, there is one trim level that stands out above the rest for embodying the most value. That honor goes to the mid-tier XLE Premium trim level. It gives you all of the desirable features found on the standard XLE trim level but builds well upon them. In particular, the power liftgate makes a huge difference since it means accessing the cargo area is exponentially easier. The SofTex upholstery is also quite delightful since it is so breathable and soft, yet durable and luxurious. The price difference between the XLE and XLE Premium is roughly $3,000, which is justifiable given the extra features that come equipped.
Of course, if you need a strong off-roader, the TRD Off-Road is the trim to buy. But it might not have the same mass appeal as the XLE Premium. You can't really go wrong with either one, but it will boil down to your preferences and your spending budget.
