While not as popular as they once were, the minivan is a vehicle style that works beautifully for some families. They are spacious and practical, plus typically fairly versatile. Choosing a minivan usually means sacrificing performance, but that is something that appears to be changing.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna is a minivan that comes standard with a hybrid powertrain. It also offers all-wheel drive, something that may grab the attention of drivers who would typically shop for an SUV for their family. In 2023, the Sienna celebrates its history with a 25th Anniversary Edition trim level. This vehicle continues the fourth generation of the vehicle, which began in 2021.

Six trim levels are available for the 2023 Toyota Sienna. None of them are particularly cheap, so buyers will want to find the trim level that has everything they need without paying for features they will never use. Reading the following guide will give drivers the info they need.

Compare the LE vs XLE Trims. What is the difference?

Like the entire lineup, the 2023 Sienna LE gets moving using a hybrid 2.5L powertrain that generates a respectable 245 horsepower. It is paired with a continuously variable transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive. If desired, buyers can upgrade this trim to all-wheel drive for added confidence when the roads get slick.

Just how efficient is the hybrid powertrain for the Sienna? With the standard front-wheel drive, this vehicle is estimated to get 36mpg both in the city and on the highway. Upgrading to all-wheel drive does not impact the highway number, but it does drop the city estimate to 35mpg.

The Sienna LE has 17-inch alloy wheels. This entry-level model can add a power moonroof with a sunshade as part of a package. Black roof rails are also optional for the Sienna LE.

There are LED headlights along with LED daytime running lights found on this Sienna. These sophisticated features are joined by a black grille. Swinging around back, there are LED taillights as well. The side mirrors are both body-colored and heated, and the door handles are body-colored as well. All Sienna models have dual power sliding side doors.

Inside the cabin, the entry-level Sienna is equipped with tri-zone automatic climate control. There are fabric-trimmed front seats and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat in there as well. The LE has a second-row bench seat and seating for up to eight people. Drivers get the info they need from a 4.2-inch multi-information display.

There are several convenient features that come standard for all models of the Sienna. This minivan has a remote keyless entry system, push-button start, and a rear window defogger with a handy timer. There are also manual second-row sunshades in the Sienna LE to keep rear passengers more comfortable. Drivers will find up to 18 cupholders when they explore the cabin.

Drivers can take advantage of one USB media port and six USB charging ports in the LE trim. There is also a single 12V outlet to help keep gear going. A 9-inch touchscreen is at the center of the infotainment system, and it gives drivers access to Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Six speakers come standard for this Sienna's sound system.

The 2023 Sienna has ten airbags standard. It comes equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system and hill start assist control. This minivan also gives drivers a variety of high-tech safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane departure alert, road sign assist, and adaptive cruise control. High-beam assist is yet another standard safety feature for the Sienna LE.

Stepping up to the XLE trim level does not change the performance of the Sienna. The exterior is upgraded by wide-angle LED foglights and a hands-free function for the standard power-sliding side doors. The door handles get a bit fancier with chrome accents but remain body-colored, and the power moonroof becomes a standard rather than an optional feature when buyers choose the XLE. This trim also benefits from a power liftgate.

One of the first upgrades that drivers will notice inside the XLE is the four-zone automatic climate control. Synthetic leather upholstery is added, and the front seats become heated. The XLE trim level is available with seating for either seven or eight, depending on the configuration of the second row. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather in the XLE, and this trim level gets an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a universal garage door feature.

Adding two extra speakers is the only tech upgrade to the interior of the Sienna XLE. It does gain front and rear parking assist with automatic braking to help increase safety, however. Going up to the XLE from the LE costs buyers around $5,000.

Compare the XLE vs XSE Trim Levels. What is the difference?

The XSE is designed to be the more athletic version of the 2023 Sienna. It backs this claim up with a sport-tuned suspension and sport-tuned power steering. Otherwise, the performance stays the same when choosing the Sienna XSE. There are 20-inch alloy wheels beneath this trim level. While they may look nice, they detract from the smoothness of the Sienna's ride. All-wheel-drive XSE models come with 18-inch wheels.

For a bolder exterior, the Sienna XSE shows off LED-strip daytime running lights. This model also has what Toyota calls "premium LED taillights." Black side rocker panels and a black metallic mesh grille add to the sporty look of the XSE. This trim level also has black side mirrors to keep up the darker theme.

An in-cabin intercom system is standard for the Sienna XSE, along with navigation for the infotainment system. These handy features add to the family appeal of this trim. The XSE comes with second-row captain's chairs, meaning it will have room for up to seven inside. It is worth noting that models with the second-row bench have five LATCH locations for car seats, while models with captain's chairs like the XSE have only four.

Stepping up to the XSE from the XLE means handing over around $2,000 more. Most of this money goes to the appearance of the minivan, although there are a couple of tempting upgrades in the cabin as well.

Compare the XSE vs 25th Anniversary Edition. What is the difference?

Next up is the brand-new 25th Anniversary Edition. Toyota is making a limited number of these models, so finding one to bring home may be a challenge. It has the same performance features as the XSE, including the sport-tuned suspension. The side mirrors remain black but add puddle lights. They are also power-folding and gain a memory function.

The Sienna 25th Anniversary Edition comes equipped with black roof rails. It features specialized badging to ensure everyone knows how unique this trim is. Inside, drivers and their front passengers can enjoy ventilated front seats. There are also exclusive 25th Anniversary Edition floor mats. The second-row captian's chairs gain ottomans, but they are not intended to be used while the vehicle is in motion. Adding the available full-size spare tire will mean losing the ottomans.

With a price tag that is nearly $4,000 higher than what buyers will be looking at with the XSE, the Sienna 25th Anniversary Edition is a bit of a hard sell. If the price tag is not enough to send buyers elsewhere, the fact that these Siennas will be rare might.

Compare the 25th Anniversary Edition vs Limited Trim. What is the difference?

The Sienna Limited is where things start to get really fancy. This trim level has a dark gray metallic front grille. As for the side mirrors, they keep all of the bells and whistles found on the 25th Anniversary Edition, but they are body-colored rather than black. This trim also swaps out the black roof rails for chrome ones instead, and the badging becomes chrome as well.

While many of the previous trims offered wireless device charing as an optional feature, the Sienna Limited has that on its standard equipment list. The seats are trimmed in genuine leather for this model as well. Every trim prior to this one has had a 4.2-inch multi-information display, but the Limited shows off a 7-inch one instead. It also adds sunshades to the third row and a 12-speaker premium sound system.

Those who choose the Limited trim level will be looking at a price jump of a bit over a grand in comparison to the 25th Anniversary Edition. The Limited costs almost four grand more than the easier-to-find XSE, and whether or not it adds enough features to justify that jump is certainly debatable.

Buyers willing to spend a little over $50,000 on their next minivan can consider the 2023 Sienna Platinum. This model gets signature Bi-LED projector lights for a bit of added class. It also adds a power-folding feature to the already fancy side mirrors. Front-wheel-drive Platinum models go up to stunning 20-inch metallic wheels that look great while diminishing the ride quality.

The Sienna Platinum is the only model to come standard with rain-sensing windshield wipers. Inside, the trim on the seats is upgraded to "premium leather." That same leather is found on the steering wheel, which is also heated on this top trim level. Another exclusive feature of the Platinum is the 10-inch head-up display that gives drivers important info without making them take their eyes off the road.

A 360-degree camera adds to the convenience of driving the Sienna Platinum. It gives an overhead view when moving at low speeds or in reverse. The price jump between the Limited and Platinum models is around $3,000.


Final Thoughts

No version of the 2023 Toyota Sienna is lacking when it comes to features. Since all models have the same powertrain, it is easy to make an argument for sticking to the entry-level LE. That said, stepping up to the XLE adds some desirable features, such as heated front seats and a moonroof.

The XSE trim level has a bolder look, but the sport-tuned suspension does little to actually improve the experience at the wheel. The 25th Anniversary Edition has some nice upgrades if buyers can find one and are willing to pay for it. Ultimately, however, the upper trim levels add features that are largely unnecessary for the average family.

Drivers should be happy with the 2023 Toyota Sienna XLE in their driveway.
