Are You Considering a 2020 Jeep Renegade? Here Are Some Reasons For and Against

SUVs have taken over the market, with smaller SUVs seemingly particularly popular. The 2020 Jeep Renegade is an intriguing option. This vehicle packs a lot of personality into a little package and is likely to catch the eye of a variety of people. Before making any decision, it is important to look at the pros and cons of the vehicle. It is also a good idea to see how it looks when compared to the competition.

What's New for 2020?

This vehicle is on the newer side, having debuted its very first generation in 2015. Multiple packages are being offered on more trim levels in 2020. These packages can do things such as add 19" wheels, more technology, or LED lighting. Models powered by the 1.3L engine get a bit of a bump in horsepower. Finally, Jeep is unveiling a smartphone app that gives drivers remote access to their Renegade, complete with a one-year trial subscription.

Ten Reasons You May Like the 2020 Jeep Renegade – The Pros

1. Easy-to-Use Infotainment System

The 2020 Jeep Renegade runs the Uconnect infotainment system. This system is very intuitive. It allows for simple smartphone integration through either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay on most models. Depending on the trim selected, screens sizes range from 5" all the way up to 8.4". Also available as part of the infotainment system is satellite radio. Going with any model except for the entry-level Sport gives drivers the option of going with the large 8.4" and adding navigation.

2. Iconic Jeep Exterior Styling

Jeeps are one of the easiest types of vehicles to recognize on the road. The Renegade manages to look fresh and modern while still maintaining that classic look. Last year, it got an updated grille, wheels, front fascia, and headlamps, making it look even sleeker than before. It is available in ten different paint colors. While many vehicles have moved toward more neutral colors recently, drivers can still find choices like Solar Yellow, Omaha Orange, and Hypergreen for the Renegade.

3. Fun to Drive

The 2020 Jeep Renegade is beautifully designed. It takes corners quickly and confidently. The ride itself is very composed, keeping passengers comfortable while the driver has their fun. Another thing this vehicle has going for it is its steering, which is quite responsive. Models equipped with the turbocharged engine are particularly fun to drive. This engine technically produces less horsepower than the standard engine, but it gives drivers quite a bit more torque. This helps with quick acceleration.

4. Trailhawk is Unbeatable Off-Road

Drivers who want the best-in-class off-roader should look no further than the 2020 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk model. This model comes standard with an advanced 4x4 system that includes low-range settings. Also standard for the Trailhawk are all-terrain tires, tow hooks, a raised suspension, a full size spare tire, skid plates, hill descent control, and more. There are unique accents for the Trailhawk, both inside and out.

5. Seven Well-Equipped Trims to Choose From

Not only is variety the spice of life, but it can also make it easier to find the perfect vehicle. There are seven different models to choose from. The entry-level is known as the Sport. It is decently equipped with Bluetooth, UConnect, a six-speaker stereo system, and more. Each step up adds more. The Trailhawk technically sits on the top of the trim ladder, but those not concerned with off-roading will also want to check out the Limited. This luxury model gives drivers leather upholstery, keyless ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power-adjustable driver's seat, plus much more. Additionally, there are several packages that can be added to each trim for further customization.

6. Removable Roof Panels

Available for all trim levels is the MySky Removable Panel Sunroof. These models have two panels in the roof that are easily removed when a driver wants to let a bit of nature in. Storing the panels is no issue thanks to the height-adjustable rear cargo area. Those who prefer a more traditional sunroof can have one on any trim but the entry-level Sport.

7. Long List of Advanced Safety Features

Drivers can add almost any advanced driver assistance feature they can think of to the 2020 Jeep Renegade. Available on certain trims are features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and front parking sensors. A rearview camera is standard. Also available is full-speed forward collision warning with active braking. This system will first alert drivers if it senses an imminent collision, and then step in and take emergency measures if necessary.

8. Available Selec-Terrain Traction Management System

Choosing the ideal vehicle settings for the journey is easier than ever in the 2020 Jeep Renegade as a result of the available traction management system. There are up to five different modes available for this system, depending on the model selected. Drivers can choose from snow, sand, rock, mud, and auto by simply turning a knob.

9. Stylish Interior Options

It is easy for drivers to customize their Renegade thanks to the long list of interior color schemes available. There are also several different seating materials to choose from. The Trailhawk, for example, can be had with black leather trim or black cloth and ruby red accent stitching. Going with the Limited trim means choosing between black leather trim or polar plunge leather trim, either or which comes with "Grillz" accents. Even the entry-level Sport allows drivers a choice between black cloth and sandstorm/black cloth.

10. Advanced Parking Assist Available

Parking can sometimes be the most stressful part of leaving the house. Thankfully, the 2020 Jeep Renegade can be had with parallel and perpendicular park featuring exit assist system with full stop. While the driver follows visual cues for accelerating, braking, and gear selection, the Renegade steers itself into a parking spot. This system uses ultrasonic parking sensors.

Reasons You May Not Like the 2020 Jeep Renegade – The Cons

1. Fuel Economy is Lacking

No one expects an SUV to be as fuel-efficient as a little hybrid sedan. That said, they do expect better numbers than those offered by the 2020 Jeep Renegade. The available turbocharged engine is a 1.3L that gives drivers 24 MPG/city and 31 MPG/highway, unless the model has all-wheel-drive. Then these numbers drop to 23 MPG/city and 29 MPG/highway. While these numbers are not terrible, they are lower than many competitors. The standard engine has lower numbers still.

2. Engine Feels a Bit Slow

The base engine for the Renegade is a 2.4L four-cylinder. It produces a respectable 180-horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. For the size and weight of a vehicle like the 2020 Jeep Renegade, however, this is just not enough to provide the "get-up-and-go" many drivers are looking for.

3. High Levels of Wind Noise

The boxy-shape of the Jeep Renegade means drivers will get a decent amount of wind noise in the cabin, particularly at highway speeds. Those who mostly do city driving may never notice this minor flaw. As for those who regularly hit the highway, they will likely get used to any noise relatively quickly.

4. Lack of Storage Solutions

Although there is a very respectable amount of space for passengers in the 2020 Jeep Renegade, finding homes for smaller items can be a challenge. There is a limited number of storage pockets, something drivers might not notice until they go to stash something.

5. Large Blind Spots

Due to the shape of the Renegade, drivers will notice pretty large blind spots. This is a result of the roof pillars that are necessary but definitely in the way. Drivers concerned about this may consider going with a model that can add the blind spot monitoring feature.

How It Stacks Up to the Competition:

Consumers will also likely check out vehicles such as the 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport when shopping for a small and athletic SUV. This is a good choice for some, but be aware that the rear seat is a bit cramped and the acceleration lags behind even the base engine of the Renegade. Another option is the Honda HR-V. This is a popular choice, but the somewhat odd exterior style will not appeal to everyone. It, too, seems to struggle off the line. Some people are even looking at the Kia Soul, which is kind of an odd entry in the small SUV segment. This vehicle is definitely quirky, but does not give drivers all-wheel-drive as even an option. Finally, drivers may turn their attention to the Mazda CX-3. This vehicle is certainly fun to drive, but it does not have as much space for either passengers or cargo as the Renegade does. The infotainment system is also not nearly as user-friendly. The 2020 Jeep Renegade beats out the competition in several key areas.

Conclusion

Buying a Jeep is rarely a bad decision. The 2020 Jeep Renegade is no exception to this rule. It offers drivers a wide variety of options, making it easy to find the perfect choice. Drivers who want a smaller SUV will want to check it out. Those in the market for a sporty option, in particular, will want to take a good look at the Trailhawk.
